MLB

The Detroit Tigers’ late comeback fell short in a 9-7 loss to the Boston Red Sox yesterday. Detroit got off to a quick start with a Jonathan Schoop solo home run in the first inning. Starter Eduardo Rodriguez made it through the first two innings, but allowed a solo shot to tie the game in the third, and left as the Sox scored six times in the fourth. The Tigers clawed their way back. Akil Baddoo homered, and Spencer Torkelson clubbed his first major league round-tripper. A three-run eighth inning narrowed the gap to two, but Detroit could get no closer.

The Tigers visit the Kansas City Royals tonight. Casey Mize will start for Detroit. Coverage begins at 7:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Shortstop Javier Báez missed yesterday’s game with a swollen thumb. He’s considered day-to-day. Outfielder Robbie Grossman also sat out, with hip and groin problems. Daz Cameron has been summoned from Toledo, and will make the trip to Kansas City with the team in case Grossman needs to be placed on the injured list.

The Tigers added some depth yesterday by obtaining utility player Jamie Westbrook from the Milwaukee Brewers in a cash deal. Westbrook will be assigned to Toledo.

The Brewers scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning, and got past the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 last night. Corbin Burnes turned in seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits, and left with a 2-0 lead. The O’s tied the game in the eighth. In the ninth, Kolton Wong tripled home Hunter Renfroe, then scored on a Rowdy Tellez double. Josh Hader earned his third save.

The Brewers host the Saint Louis Cardinals in their home opener this afternoon. Brandon Woodruff will start against Adam Wainwright.

NFL

The Detroit Lions have reportedly reached a one-year deal with former Baltimore Ravens safety DeShon Elliott.
