Baraga Girls Head to State Semifinals – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

The Baraga High School girls basketball team is headed to the state semifinals in East Lansing, after a 57-40 victory over Pickford last night. The Vikings took control early, and led by 17 at halftime. Kylie Michaelson led Baraga with 15 points, and Reide Osterman added 14. The Vikings will take on defending Division Four champion Fowler Thursday at 5:30 at the Breslin Center. The Eagles eliminated Gaylord Saint Mary 58-26 last evening. Baraga enters the game with a record of 23-1. Fowler is 22-3. Adrian Lenawee Christian and Plymouth Christian will meet in the other Division Four semifinal. In the boys high school basketball tournament tonight, Ewen-Trout Creek will face North Central in the Division Four Regional final at 7:00 at Negaunee.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team has added a new recruit. Guard Dan Gherezgher averaged 19 points per game for Brookfield East High School in Wisconsin this winter.

College Hockey

Four Michigan Tech hockey players have received All-Conference honors from teh Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Brian Halonen was named to the All-CCHA First Team. Trenton Bliss, Blake Pietila and Colin Swoyer were placed on the Second Team.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings couldn’t climb out of an early hole, and lost 7-5 to the Edmonton Oilers last night. Detroit goalie Thomas Greiss was pulled after giving up three goals on the first six shots he faced over four-and-a-half minutes. After trailing 4-1 at the end of the first period, Detroit charged back. Lucas Raymond’s tally early in the third period tied the contest, but Edmonton added a late even-strength goal, and tacked on an empty-netter to seal the win.

The Wings have dropped their last six games, and visit the Vancouver Canucks tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 9:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons lost 105-98 to the Miami Heat last evening. Jerami Grant led Detroit with 22 points.

The Pistons have lost four straight, and visit the Orlando Magic tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

The Detroit Lions have re-signed wide receiver Kalif Raymond to a two-year contract.

The Lions have received three additional picks in the upcoming NFL Draft as compensation for free agents lost before the start of the 2022 season. The highest is pick number 97, in exchange for receiver Kenny Golladay, who signed with the New York Giants. The other selections are in the fifth and sixth rounds.

The Green Bay Packers will receive compensatory picks in the fourth and seventh rounds for the two restricted free agents they lost, including All-Pro center Corey Linsley.

And, the deal is official. The Packers and quarterback Aaron Rodgers signed a four-year contract extension yesterday. Rodgers won his second straight NFL Most Valuable Player Award last season, and was named to the Pro Bowl for a team-record 10th time. The Packers also signed linebacker Preston Smith to a contract extension.
