Tech, Northern Fall in CCHA Semifinals – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

After first announcing that Tuesday’s quarterfinal girls basketball game between Baraga and Pickford would be played at Negaunee, the Baraga Athletic Department now reports that the Michigan High School Athletic Association moved the game to Munising, with tipoff at 6:00.

The state high school hockey champions were crowned Saturday…
• In Division Three, Midland Dow blanked Orchard Lake Saint Mary’s 2-0.
• In Division Two, Hartland edged Trenton 3-2 in overtime.
• In Division One, Detroit Catholic Central routed Brighton 5-1.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team lost to Bemidji State 5-2 Saturday in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association semifinals. Trenton Bliss put Tech on top early, but the Beavers scored five straight goals to take command. Tommy Parrottino scored the Huskies’ other goal in the closing minute. With a record of 21-12-3, the Huskies will find out next Sunday if they will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.

Northern Michigan’s season ended with an 8-1 CCHA semifinal loss at top-ranked Minnesota State.

The Beavers and Mavericks will meet for the Mason Cup in a one-game final next weekend.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines wrapped up their regular season with a 7-2 victory over the De Pere Deacons Saturday night. Jason Carne stopped 48 shots, and Logan Rastello had a goal and three assists.

The Portage Lake Pioneers fell to the Mosinee Papermakers 7-3 Saturday night. The Pioneers conclude their regular season this afternoon against the Deacons. Faceoff is at 1:00 at Dee Stadium.

Junior Hockey

The Copper Country Junior Hockey Association is hosting the 14U AA State Tournament this weekend. After dropping their first two games in pool play Friday, the Portage Lake Flyers fell 6-2 to the Traverse City North Stars Saturday, and were eliminated from the tournament. Troy Sting Gold will face the Flint Junior Firebirds in today’s first semifinal at 9:15. Marquette American Legion will face the KVHA Rebels at 11:15. The winners will play for the championship at 5:30. All games are at the Houghton County Arena, and there is no admission charge. To view the full schedule and results, click here.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings’ struggles continued with a 3-0 loss at Calgary Saturday evening.

The Wings have dropped five straight, and skate at Edmonton Tuesday. Coverage will begin at 8:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Detroit Pistons host the Los Angeles Clippers this afternoon.

Cross Country Skiing

At the UP Health System Great Bear Chase Saturday at the Swedetown Trails…
• Mark Ousdigian of Shoreview, Minnesota won the 50k Skiathlon, a minute ahead of David Joda from Saint Paul. Stephanie Balas from Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin, was the fastest woman.
• Eric Patterson from Duluth claimed the 50k Classic, outpacing Marquette’s Christian Byar by more than four minutes. Patterson also won the event in 2020. Calumet’s Kyia Anderson took the women’s title.
• Dennis Curran from Plymouth, Minnesota, earned the 50k Freestyle title, finishing 78 seconds better than Jay Woodbeck of Saint Paul. Marquette’s Hanna Derby was the top women’s finisher.
• Luke Gesior from Minneapolis won the 25k Classic, with Houghton’s Eric Weiss 51 seconds off the pace. Abby Scheller from Champlin, Minnesota, was the top women’s finisher.
• Kevin Tarras of Grawn, Michigan, took the 25k Freestyle crown, more than three minutes better than Atlantic Mine’s Samuel Kilpela. Linnea Ousdigian from Saint Paul was the fastest woman.
• Samuel Markley from Marquette won the 10k Classic, with Houghton’s Jaden Serafin the fastest woman.
• Dan Gwidt of Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin took the 10k Freestyle, with Ivy Dickman of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, the top woman.
