Calumet Hockey Falls in Semifinals – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

The Calumet High School hockey team lost 4-3 to Midland Dow in the state Division Three semifinals yesterday afternoon. The score was tied at two after the first period, as Calumet got goals from Gabe Mattila and Jackson Rilei. After the Chargers scored two more, Ayden Williams closed the gap to one with five minutes remaining. With their goalie pulled, the Copper Kings poured on the pressure in the closing minutes, but couldn’t get the score they needed to force overtime. Aksel Loukus made 37 saves.

Midland Dow will face Orchard Lake Saint Mary’s in the Division Three championship game today. The Eaglets eliminated Warren de la Salle 2-1 in triple overtime yesterday.

In boys district basketball finals last night…
• In Division Four, District 98, Lake Linden-Hubbell edged L’Anse 55-50. In Division Four, District 97, Ewen-Trout Creek defeated Wakefield-Marenisco 57-38. The Lakes and Panthers will meet in a regional semifinal Monday at 5:30 at Negaunee. North Central and Munising will play in the other regional semifinal.
• In Division Three, Jeffers’ season ended with a 76-65 loss to Westwood. The Jets close an excellent campaign with a record of 18-4.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association has announced that the Tuesday’s girls basketball quarterfinal game between Baraga and Pickford will be played at Negaunee, with a 6:00 tipoff. LATE ADDITION – THE BARAGA ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT REPORTS THE SITE HAS BEEN MOVED TO MUNISING.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team will host Bemidji State in their Central Collegiate Hockey Association semifinal game tonight at 6:07 at the SDC. Northern Michigan will play its semifinal game at Minnesota State. The winners will meet for the Mason Cup in a one-game final next weekend.

GLHL

Both the Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines are wrapping up their Great Lakes Hockey League regular seasons this weekend…
• The Pioneers dropped an 8-7 decision to the Mutineers in Marquette last night. The Pios will host the Mosinee Papermakers tonight at 7:30, and the De Pere Deacons tomorrow at 1:00.
• The Papermakers scored a couple of late power play goals, and edged the Calumet Wolverines 7-6 last night. The Wolverines host the Deacons tonight at 7:30.

Junior Hockey

The Copper Country Junior Hockey Association is hosting the 14U AA State Tournament this weekend. The Portage Lake Flyers opened play yesterday with a 7-2 loss to the Flint Junior Firebirds, then fell 6-1 to the Marquette American Legion team. The Flyers’ next game is today at noon against the Traverse City North Stars. All games are free to attend, and will take place at the Houghton County Arena. NHL

The Detroit Red Wings skate at Calgary this evening. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Wings will finish the season without Robby Fabbri. Fabbri tore his right ACL during Thursday’s loss. Taro Hirose has been called up from the Grand Rapids Griffins. Tyler Bertuzzi will miss the next three Wings games, because they’re in Canada, and he won’t get a COVID-19 vaccination.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons lost to the Boston Celtics 114-103 last night. Cade Cunningham scored 27 points.

The Pistons host the Los Angeles Clippers tomorrow afternoon. Coverage will begin at 2:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

With labor peace restored, the Detroit Tigers have announced a revised spring training schedule. Detroit will play 18 games against the Phillies, Pirates, Yankees, Blue Jays and Orioles between next Friday and April 5th. The Tigers will open the regular season April 8th at home against the Chicago White Sox. Hear selected spring training games and all of the Tigers regular-season contests on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers will also open their exhibition schedule next Friday, and will play 18 Cactus League games between then and April 5th. The Crew will open the season April 7th against the Cubs in Chicago. Their home opener will be April 14th against the Saint Louis Cardinals.

Cross Country Skiing

The UP Health System Great Bear Chase will be held today at the Swedetown Trails. The event will include 50k, 25k and 10k classic and freestyle races, along with a 50k skiathlon. Last night’s Junior Bear Chase was canceled because of cold temperatures and gusty winds. See full details here.
