JR Anderson Wins His Third CopperDog 150 – Monday Sports Wrap

High School

The Calumet High School hockey team advanced to the state semifinals with a 5-1 victory over Alpena Saturday. Calumet will face Midland Dow Friday at 1:30 in the semifinals at Plymouth. The Chargers defeated East Grand Rapids 3-1 in their quarterfinal game Saturday. Warren de la Salle will face Orchard Lake Saint Mary’s in the other Division Three semifinal.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team advanced to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association tournament semifinals with a 3-2 double overtime victory over Ferris State University Saturday.

Northern Michigan University edged Lake Superior State 5-4 to win game three of their quarterfinal series yesterday.

In the single-game semifinals Saturday, Michigan Tech will host Bemidji State at 6:07. Northern will play at Minnesota State.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams lost in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament Saturday…
• At Allendale, the women fell to top-seeded Grand Valley 71-57.
• At the SDC, the men lost 78-71 to Northern Michigan University.

Eight-seeded Davenport University completed its stunning playoff run by defeating Northern 100-67 in the championship game yesterday. The Panthers claimed the GLIAC’s automatic NCAA tournament bid. Ferris State earned an at-large berth in the NCAA tournament. Michigan Tech’s men’s team was not invited.

Ferris State upset Grand Valley 59-51 to win the GLIAC women’s title.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings host the Arizona Coyotes tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Wings have claimed defenseman Olli Juolevi off waivers from the Florida Panthers. To make roster room, they sent forward Joe Veleno to the Grand Rapids Griffins.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons host the Atlanta Hawks tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

CopperDog 150

J.R. Anderson won his second straight CopperDog 150, and his third overall, with a dominating performance over the weekend. Anderson turned in the fastest stages Friday and Saturday, and the second-fastest yesterday. He outpaced runner-up Ryan Anderson by 22 minutes. Local musher Sarah Tarlton placed fourth, and Tom Bauer finished eighth. In the CopperDog 80, Martha Schouweiler came from behind yesterday to claim the title, finishing less than two minutes ahead of Lynne Witte. Among local mushers, Jerry Trudell finished fifth, Kiira Hadden seventh, and Sophie Mehl ninth. In the CopperDog 25 on Saturday, Ben Thompson claimed his third straight win, edging Geri Minard by 11 seconds. Among local mushers, Susan Serafini was 10th, Becky Bean 13th, Alyssa Sarlund 15th, and Kelly Jo Engle 16th. See full results here.

Guts Frisbee

Hancock’s Shottle Bop team defeated Marquette’s Wooden Nickel to win the Iron Man 3 on 3 Guts Frisbee Tournament in Hartland over the weekend. Shottle Bop won the final 21-19, 21-6. Will Blau took MVP honors for the tournament.
