Girls basketball district titles will be decided tonight…
• In Division Four District 98, L’Anse tips off at Baraga at 6:00.
• In Division Four District 97, Ewen-Trout Creek plays at Ontonagon at 7:00.
• In Division Three District 65, Calumet hosts Ishpeming. That start time has been pushed back to 7:00. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• In Division Two District 33, Houghton plays at Negaunee at 6:00. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
The boys regular season wrapped up last night…
• Houghton edged Westwood 72-71.
• Hancock downed Calumet 45-33.
• Jeffers smothered Watersmeet 93-36. Johnny Schutz scored 35 for the Jets. Tyson Klingman had 18 for the Nimrods.
• Baraga got past Republic-Michigamme 51-47.
• Ontonagon downed Bessemer 54-42.
• Ewen-Trout Creek shut down L’Anse 78-32.
Calumet will face Alpena in the quarterfinals of the state hockey tournament tomorrow at 1:00 at Lakeview Arena in Marquette. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3, and we’ll follow the Kings as far as they go in the state tournament.
College Hockey
The Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs open tonight…
• Michigan Tech is seeded second, and hosts seventh seed Ferris State. Faceoffs are at 7:07 tonight and 6:07 tomorrow, with game three Sunday if needed.
• Northern Michigan is seeded fifth, and plays at fourth seed Lake Superior State.
College Basketball
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament will conclude this weekend…
• The women’s tournament is being held at Grand Valley State. Michigan Tech faces the top-seeded Lakers in the first semifinal tomorrow at 2:00. Wayne State and Ferris State will meet in the second semifinal.
• Michigan Tech is hosting the men’s tournament. The Huskies will face Northern Michigan tomorrow at noon in the first semifinal. Davenport will play Saginaw Valley State in the second semifinal at 2:00.
• Championship games at both sites will be played Sunday.
College Softball
The Finlandia softball team fell 12-1 to the Rose-Hulman Institute, and 9-1 to Houghton College yesterday. The Lions will play St. Mary’s of Minnesota and Plymouth State today.
College Baseball
The Finlandia baseball team lost 9-2 and 13-1 to St. Vincent College yesterday. The Lions will play two against Martin Luther College today.
GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers entertain the Fox Cities Ice Dogs tonight, and the Fond du Lac Bears tomorrow. Both games start at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.
The Calumet Wolverines host the Bears tonight, and the Ice Dogs tomorrow. Tonight’s faceoff has been pushed back to 8:00, to give fans a chance to attend the start of the CopperDog 150. Tomorrow’s game will start at 7:30. Before tomorrow’s game, the Wolverines will host their annual Spaghetti fundraiser. Meals will be served between 11:00 and 4:00 tomorrow. Tickets are $10.00, and will be available at the door. Meal tickets also include admission to tomorrow night’s game.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings visit the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons slipped past the Toronto Raptors 108-106 last night. Jerami Grant scored 26, Saddiq Bey added 23, and Cade Cunningham had 22 points and 12 rebounds.
The Pistons host the Indiana Pacers tonight.
CopperDog 150
The CopperDog 150 begins tonight. The starting line returns to Fifth Street in downtown Calumet, with the opening ceremony beginning around 6:30, and the first team leaving the gate at 7:00. The three-stage 150 and the two-stage CopperDog 80 will both begin tonight. The first leg of the 80 will end at the Cliff View Bar in Phoenix. The first leg of the 150 will end in Eagle Harbor. Stage two will run from Eagle Harbor to Copper Harbor tomorrow morning. The single-stage CopperDog 25 will start and end in Copper Harbor tomorrow afternoon. The final stages of the 150 and the 80 will both leave Copper Harbor Sunday morning, with the finish for both races in Eagle Harbor. Last year’s defending champions are scheduled to compete – J.R. Anderson from the 150, and Ben Thompson from the 25. There was no CopperDog 80 last year, as the race downsized because of COVID-19 concerns.
