Gremlins, Kings, Vikes and Hornets Advance in Girls Hoops Tourney – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In girls basketball tournament district semifinals last night…
• In Division Four District 98…
  – Baraga smothered Chassell 76-22. Every Viking scored, led by Corina Jahfetson with 16 points, and Reide Osterman with 15.
  – L’Anse dispatched Lake Linden-Hubbell 56-29.
– The Purple Hornets and Vikings will meet tomorrow at 6:00 at Baraga for the district title.

• In Division Four District 97 at Ontonagon…
  – Ontonagon got past Ironwood 33-25.
  – Ewen-Trout Creek ousted Watersmeet 52-28.
– The Gladiators will host the Panthers in the district title game tomorrow at 7:00.

 • Division Three District 65…
  – Ishpeming upset Hancock 46-41.
  – Calumet eliminated Westwood 56-42. Marybeth Halonen led Calumet with 17 points, and Alexis Strom added 15. Natalie Prophet scored 19 for the Patriots.
– The Copper Kings will host Ishpeming tomorrow night at 6:00 for the district title. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

 • Division Two District 33…
  – Houghton routed Kingsford 87-32. Five Gremlins reached double figures in scoring, led by Meghan Trewhella with 17 points, and Annika Peterson with 15.
  – Negaunee dispatched Escanaba 65-54.
– Houghton will play at Negaunee tomorrow at 6:00 for the district title. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.

The boys regular season wraps up tonight…
• Houghton welcomes Westwood.
• Calumet plays at Hancock. Coverage will begin around 7:00 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3 .
• Jeffers travels to Watersmeet.
• Baraga hosts Republic-Michigamme.
• Ontonagon welcomes Bessemer.
• L’Anse journeys to Ewen-Trout Creek for a game that was rescheduled from last Thursday.

Calumet will face Alpena in the state hockey quarterfinal game Saturday. The Wildcats outscored Gaylord 9-6 to win their regional hockey title last night. Saturday’s contest will begin at 1:00 at Lakeview Arena in Marquette. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams advanced in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament last night…
• The fourth-seeded Tech women edged Northwood 87-77 in overtime. Ellie Mackay led the Huskies with 23 points. Sara Dax added 20, and Sloane Zenner posted a career-best 19. Tech will face top-seeded Grand Valley Saturday afternoon in Allendale in one semifinal. The Lakers advanced with a 71-52 win over Northern Michigan last evening. Wayne State and Ferris State will meet in the other semifinal.
• The second-seeded Tech men eliminated Wisconsin-Parkside 66-53. Owen White scored 20 points. Davenport ousted top-seeded Ferris State 91-90, so the Huskies will host the semifinals and championship game this weekend. Tech will face third-seeded Northern Michigan. The Huskies ousted Lake Superior State 99-94 in overtime last night. Davenport will play Saginaw Valley State in the other semifinal.

College Hockey

Finlandia University women’s hockey coach Lindsay Macy has been named Women’s Coach of the Year by the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. The Lions broke a 46-game winless streak with three victories late in the season. They made the post-season playoffs for the first time since 2010.

College Softball

The Finlandia softball team had yesterday off, and will continue their Florida schedule against the Rose-Hulman Institute and Houghton College today.

College Baseball

The Finlandia baseball team resumes its southern schedule today with a doubleheader against St. Vincent College.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Tampa Bay Lightning tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons visit the Toronto Raptors tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.
