Halonen, Driscoll Lead WestPAC Girls All-Stars – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In boys high school basketball last night…
• Houghton lost at Iron Mountain 60-40.
• Baraga fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 99-36.
• Ewen-Trout Creek dispatched Bessemer 74-51.

In girls action last night…
• Houghton defeated Ontonagon 67-40.
• Calumet shut down Lake Linden-Hubbell 61-28. Alexis Strom led the Copper Kings with 17 points. Marybeth Halonen added 15, and Laina Kariniemi had 12. Emily Jokela scored nine for the Lakes.
• Hancock outscored L’Anse 59-38.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City got past Jeffers 44-36.
• Chassell edged Watersmeet 50-45. Trisha Pietila led the Panthers with 13 points.
• Ewen-Trout Creek downed Bessemer 43-28.

On the boys schedule tonight…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell tips off at Calumet at 4:30.
• Hancock travels to West Iron County.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City visits Ontonagon.
• Ewen-Trout Creek travels to Kingsford.

The girls regular season wraps up tonight…
• Calumet hosts Escanaba in a make-up game from February 22nd.
• Baraga visits Watersmeet to make up a contest from January 13th.

Calumet’s Marybeth Halonen has been named Player of the Year in the WestPAC. Sierrah Driscoll of Hancock was named Defensive Player of the Year, and Matt Laho of the Copper Kings was named Coach of the Year.

Local Dream Team honorees include Paige Sleeman from Houghton, Jana Loukus from Calumet, and Isabella Hebert from Hancock.

First Team honorees in the Copper Division include Meghan Trewhella and Stella Wickstrom from Houghton, Kaisa Salani from Hancock, Alexis Strom from Calumet, and Danika Shamion from West Iron County. Honorable mention votes went to Houghton’s Annika Peterson, Calumet’s Laina Karinieme and Hancock’s Kalli Chynoweth. See the full WestPAC All-Conference roster here.

The high school hockey regional championship will be decided tomorrow, when Calumet and Houghton face off at noon at the SDC. Coverage of the title game will begin at 11:40 on KBear 102.3, and we’ll follow the winner as far as they go.

The Houghton Alpine ski teams swept the U.P. Championships at Mont Ripley yesterday…
• Ashley Lehmann had two top-five finishes, as the girls edged Norway by three points.
• Reed Heathman won the slalom and giant slalom, as the boys shaded Marquette by three points.

Lehmann was named to the All-U.P. Girls First Team, and Keegan Leonard was placed on the Second Team. Reed and Eli Heathman both received Boys First Team honors, and Logan Niemi was named to the Second Team.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech basketball teams split a pair of close games at Ferris State last night…
• Sarah Dax scored 23, as the women edged the Bulldogs 63-59.
• The men forced the 25th-ranked Bulldogs into overtime, but fell 76-72. Owen White scored 24 points for the Huskies.

Both Tech teams conclude their regular seasons at Lake Superior State tomorrow.

Both Northern Michigan teams won at Lake Superior State last night…
• The women outscored the Lakers 59-51.
• The men cruised to a 102-69 victory.

Both Northern teams wrap their regular campaigns at Ferris State tomorrow.

The Finlandia University women’s basketball team lost to the University of Mary Washington 66-53 in the opening round of the Coast to Coast Conference tournament in Santa Cruz, California, yesterday. Katie Lundeen scored 19 for the Lions, and Bailey Froberg added 15. Finlandia concludes its season with a record of 14-9.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team wraps up its regular season with home games against Minnesota State tonight at 7:07, and tomorrow at 6:07.

Northern’s hockey team concludes its regular campaign by hosting Ferris State tonight and tomorrow.

Finlandia women’s hockey opens the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association tournament with games at top-seeded Adrian College tonight and tomorrow afternoon.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers visit the West Bend Bombers tonight, and the Fond du Lac Bears tomorrow.

The Calumet Wolverines visit the Bears tonight, and the Bombers tomorrow.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings entertain the Toronto Maple Leafs tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons got past the Cleveland Cavaliers 106-103 last night. Hamidou Diallo led Detroit with 21 points, and Cade Cunningham sank four late free throws to ensure Detroit’s second win in a row.

The Pistons host the Boston Celtics tomorrow at noon. Coverage will begin at 11:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
