Tech Hockey Falls, but Still Claims MacInnes Trophy – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey Saturday…
• Calumet fell to Notre Dame de la Baie 5-1.
• Jeffers lost 9-2 to the FNV co-op team from Freeland, Saginaw Nouvel and Saginaw Valley Lutheran at the Cheboygan Showcase.

The Copper Country Christian School basketball teams split their games at the Northland Scholar Academy in Dunbar, Wisconsin, Saturday. The girls led wire-to-wire in a 31-24 victory. Nora Holmes scored 16 points. The boys fell 67-50. Caleb Bach led all scorers with 23 points, and Daba Holmes added 14.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey settled for a split in the Winter Carnival series against Bowling Green, falling 4-2 Saturday night. Goals by Eric Gotz and Matthew Quercia staked the Huskies to an early 2-1 lead, but the Falcons scored three straight against Blake Pietila to win the game. Pietila made 26 saves. The Huskies won the MacInnes Trophy by outscoring BGSU 6-4 in the two-game series. Brian Halonen was named the series’ Most Valuable Player, with a goal and two assists.

The Northern hockey team has the weekend off.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team fell to Concordia-Wisconsin 5-4 Saturday. Chris Beyer scored twice for the Lions, and Nick Solema and Tyler Perkins each found the net once. Marcus Gloss made 53 saves.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team’s three-game winning streak ended with a 6-2 loss at Marian University Saturday. Aleah Giddings and Cassidy Becia found the net for the Lions. Laney Pasemko made 25 saves.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team lost 61-45 at fifth-ranked Grand Valley State Saturday afternoon. After building a slight halftime lead, the Huskies were held to just 16 points in the second half. Alex Rondorf paced the Huskies with 11 points.

The Tech men’s team downed GVSU 75-67 for its seventh straight victory. Four Huskies scored in double figures, led by Owen White with 20.

Both Northern teams earned wins at Davenport Saturday – the women 54-43, and the men 81-75.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team claimed a 76-58 victory at Grace Christian Saturday. Bailey Froberg scored 20 for the Lions.

The Finlandia men’s team lost 95-77 at Grace Christian. B.J. Williams led the Lions with 29 points.

Both Finlandia basketball teams play at Great Lakes Christian today.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines defeated the Portage Lake Pioneers 8-3 Saturday night.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings downed the Philadelphia Flyers 4-2 Saturday afternoon. Tyler Bertuzzi and Filip Zadina gave the Wings an early lead. Moritz Seider scored the game-winner early in the third period, and Michael Rasmussen added a late insurance tally. Thomas Greiss made 32 saves in his first start in more than a month.

The Wings visit the Minnesota Wild tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons visit the Washington Wizards tomorrow.

NFL

The Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals will meet in the Super Bowl tonight. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

Olympics

Iron River’s Nick Baumgartner has earned a gold medal at the Winter Olympics. The oldest member of the USA team and his partner, Lindsey Jacobellis, took top honors in the new mixed snowboardcross competition. At age 40, and in his fourth Olympics, it’s Baumgartner’s first gold medal.

Broadcasting

Veteran Detroit sportscaster Frank Beckman has died. Beckman served as sports director at WJR for many years. He called games for the Detroit Pistons and Red Wings early on, and served longer stints as the voice of the Detroit Lions and Tigers, and University of Michigan football. Beckman was 72, and had been in hospice care since suffering several recent strokes.
