Gremlins, ‘Dogs Earn Trenton Hockey Wins – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

At the Trenton MIHL Showcase Saturday…
• Hancock routed Rockford 6-1.
• Houghton downed Orchard Lake St. Mary 4-2. Camden Markham had two goals and an assist. Landon Stevens and Gaborik Carlson each had a goal and two assists. Troy Povich got the win in net.
• Calumet lost to Grosse Pointe South 4-1. 

At the Wisigan Invitational at the SDC Saturday…
• Negaunee buried Merrill 9-1.
• Jeffers lost to Manistique 2-1. Karl Rautiola scored the Jets’ only goal. Simon Rajala made 36 saves.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team blanked St. Thomas 2-0 Saturday night. Tommy Parrottino and Brett Thorne scored for the Huskies. Blake Pietila stopped 13 shots, and tied a Tech record with his sixth shutout of the season.

The NMU hockey squad lost 5-3 at Bemidji State.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team fell 5-0 at Marian University Saturday.

The Finlandia women’s team has the weekend off.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team dropped an 81-67 decision at Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday afternoon. The Huskies were held to just 19 points in the first half. Sara Dax scored 15 for Tech.

The Tech men’s team earned its fifth straight victory, outscoring Parkside 90-75. Adam Hobson led a balanced attack with 20 points, and Owen White and Trent Bell each scored 19.

The Northern Michigan women’s team lost a 53-52 thriller at Purdue Northwest Saturday. The Wildcats led by six with 41 seconds remaining, before a late surge from the Pride.

Northern’s men’s team claimed an 87-69 victory at Purdue Northwest.

The Finlandia University women’s basketball team outscored Maranatha Baptist 76-50 Saturday afternoon. Katie Lundeen led the Lions with 21 points.

The Finlandia men’s team defeated Maranatha Baptist 79-70. Danny Zuchak scored 24.

The Finlandia women’s team entertains Christopher Newport University from Newport News, Virginia, this afternoon. The start time has been moved up from 3:00 to 1:00. Coverage will start at 12:40 on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines retired the jersey of longtime coach Bruce “Cukie” Coppo Saturday night, then defeated the Marquette Mutineers 7-3. Austin Rilei had two goals.

The Portage Lake Pioneers v the Eagle River Falcons – no report.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings are off until Wednesday, when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers. Coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons visit the Minnesota Timberwolves today.

NFL
