MLB
An effective start by Mike Pelfrey went for naught, as the Detroit Tigers were shut out by the Toronto Blue Jays 6-0 Friday night. Pelfrey gave up one run on six hits over six innings. The Jays blew the game open in the seventh, with an RBI double by Kevin Pillar off Kyle Ryan, and a three-run homer by Edwin Encarnacion off Bobby Parnell. Their final run came off Mark Lowe in the eighth inning.

The Tigers continue that set at Toronto this afternoon. Matt Boyd has been called up from Toledo to start against Aaron Sanchez. Hear the first pitch at 1:07 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

After the game, Parnell was optioned to Toledo to make room for Boyd. With both Jordan Zimmermann and Daniel Norris on the disabled list, manager Brad Ausmus said that Anibal Sanchez will start Sunday’s game.

Villar

Initial tests indicate that the muscle pain  Zimmermann has been experiencing in his neck is not an indication of a more serious underlying condition. Zimmermann hopes to resume throwing in a few days, and return to the rotation after the All Star break.

Jonathan Villar’s single in the bottom of the ninth drove in the winning run, as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Saint Louis Cardinals 4-3 Friday night. Kirk Nieuwenhuis just beat left fielder Tommy Pham’s throw to catcher Yadier Molina to end the game. The Cardinals challenged the call, which was upheld after a video review. The Brewers had led 3-2 going into the eighth inning, powered by two solo home runs from Chris Carter, and one from Jonathan Lucroy. Molina’s solo blast off Will Smith tied it in the eighth, and set up Milwaukee’s first walk-off win of the season.

The Brewers host the Cardinals again this afternoon. Chase Anderson will pitch against Carlos Martinez.
