Hancock Falls in WestPAC Title Bid; Calumet Playoff Hopes Still Alive – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school football last night…
– West Iron County clinched the WestPAC championship with a 30-13 victory over Hancock .
– Calumet kept its playoff hopes alive with a 30-22 win over the Gogebic Miners. The Copper Kings could clinch a guaranteed post-season berth next week with a win over Mid-Peninsula Conference champion Gladstone.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell fell at Norway 21-11. The loss likely eliminated the Lakes from the playoffs.
– L’Anse lost at Northland Pines 16-7. The Purple Hornets would need a win over WestPAC champion West Iron County next week, and some luck, to reach the playoffs.
– Houghton lost at Hurley 22-6.
– Ontonagon fell to Forest Park 52-38.

In volleyball last night…
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City v Chassell – not reported.

In volleyball today, Marquette, Calumet, Hancock, Chassell and Baraga are among the teams competing at the Houghton Invitational.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball team picked up two victories at the Grace Bible College tournament in suburban Grand Rapids yesterday. The Lions beat Mount Mary 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 26-24, 25-22) and Grace Bible 3-2 (26-28, 25-22, 19-25, 25-21, 16-14). The Lions will face Faith Baptist Bible College today.

The Finlandia football team hosts Trinity Bible College today at noon. Pregame coverage will start around 11:40 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team plays at Mount Mary University this morning. The men’s team visits Concordia-Wisconsin this afternoon.

Both Finlandia basketball teams will start their practice schedules with a Midnight Madness event tonight . Fans are invited to the Paavo Nurmi Center beginning at 10:00 for a student versus faculty basketball game, a three-point shooting contest, and other activities. The teams will be introduced at 11:50, and the men’s team will begin a scrimmage at midnight.

MTU
The MTU hockey team defeated Lake Superior State 4-3 last night. Gavin Gould and Jake Jackson gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead in the first period. The Lakers came back to tie the contest in the third period, but Gould’s second goal of the night put Tech back on top, and Greyson Reitmeier’s first collegiate goal 53 seconds later proved to be the game-winner. Patrick Munson made 21 saves to earn the win in net. Those teams play again tonight at the Soo.

The Michigan Tech volleyball team opened the Midwest Regional Crossover Tournament in Aurora, Illinois, yesterday with a 3-0 victory over Bellarmine. Defensive specialist Halie Hart collected her 1,000th career dig. The Huskies then dropped a 3-0 decision to Drury. The Huskies wrap up the tournament this afternoon against Findlay.

The MTU soccer team couldn’t overcome a slow start, and fell 2-1 to Ashland last night. Marisa DeMario’s goal in the 83rd minute made it close, but the Huskies couldn’t complete the comeback.

The Tech football team plays at Ashland this afternoon.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team won 3-2 at Ferris State last night. Those teams play again tonight in Big Rapids.

The NMU football team plays at Tiffin today.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings scored four goals in the third period, and came from behind to defeat the Las Vegas Golden Knights 6-3 last night. Gustav Nyquist had two goals and an assist, and Anthony Mantha had a goal and two assists. Petr Mrazek gave up all three Vegas goals in the second period, but wound up stopping 24 shots to get the win. Face-off is at 10:30 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons closed their preseason schedule last night with a 107-103 loss at Milwaukee. We’ll broadcast selected Pistons regular-season games on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB
The Houston Astros edged the New York Yankees 2-1 in the opening game of the American League Championship Series last night. Game two will be played today in Houston.

The National League Championship Series between the Dodgers and Cubs begins tonight in Los Angeles.
