Hancock Wins CIC; Huskies Sweep Alaska – Sunday Sports Wrap

– Hancock won the Copper Island Classic, defeating Calumet 5-1 in the second game of the total-goals series Saturday night. The Bulldogs opened up a 2-0 lead in the first period. The Copper Kings scored the only goal of the second period. Devyn LaCourt, Alex Nordstrom and Brice Randell scored for Hancock to put the game away in the final stanza. The Bulldogs claimed the first game of the series 4-3 on Friday night, and earned the title with a 9-4 total goal advantage.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team completed a sweep at Alaska-Fairbanks with a 2-1 victory Saturday night. Goals by Brent Baltus and Shane Hannah gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead midway through the second period. The Nanooks got one back, but Angus Redmond made 26 saves to preserve the win. Tech beat Alaska 4-1 Friday night. The Huskies have not lost in their last six games, and have defeated the Nanooks 10 straight times.

The MTU women’s basketball team fell to ninth-ranked Bellarmine 78-62 at the Thanksgiving Classic at the University of Southern Indiana on Saturday. Morgan Anderson led the Huskies with 16 points and nine rebounds. Tech will face host team today.

The MTU men’s basketball team held off a late comeback by Minnesota-Duluth, and earned a 68-65 victory Saturday. The Huskies built a 10-point lead midway through the second half. The game ended after Tommy Lucca hit a couple of free throws with 26 seconds remaining, and the Bulldogs missed a last-second three-point attempt. Kyle Monroe led the Huskies with 19 points and a dozen rebounds.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team fell 2-0 to Nebraska-Omaha Saturday night. The Wildcats and Mavericks skated to a 2-2 draw on Friday.

NMU Logo HeadThe NMU women’s basketball team earned an 81-69 victory over Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday at the Puma Thanksgiving Classic at St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana. The Wildcats lost to the host team 60-44 on Friday.

The NMU men’s basketball team had the weekend off.

Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s hockey team lost 8-1 at Wisconsin-Superior Saturday night. Chuck Marcoe scored the Lions’ only goal. Alec Rounds made 32 saves, as the Lions were outshot 40-18.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team will host Carroll University today at 1:00.

The Detroit Red Wings lost a 2-1 overtime decision to the Montreal Canadiens Saturday night. Alex Galchenyuk scored with 1:23 left in the extra period.  Justin Abdelkader tallied Detroit’s only goal. Petr Mrazek made 22 saves, starting in place of the injured Jimmy Howard. The Wings host the Dallas Stars on Tuesday. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Two Detroit players left Saturday’s game with injuries. Tyler Bertuzzi slammed into the boards after a hit, and Brendan Smith injured a knee in a collision. Both will be evaluated today, and their playing status is unknown.

The Detroit Pistons’ modest two-game win streak ended with an ugly 106-88 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder Saturday night. Detroit fell behind early, but closed the gap to three points in the third quarter before the Thunder pulled away. The Pistons hit just one of 19 shots from three-point range. Tobias Harris led Detroit with 21 points. The Pistons play at Charlotte Tuesday night.

The Green Bay Packers will play at Philadelphia in the Monday night game tomorrow. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
