Michigan Tech quarterback Brandon Cowie has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Cowie completed 26 of 28 passes for 280 yards and three touchdowns in the Huskies’ win over Walsh on Saturday. His completion percentage of 92.8 percent set a new school record, and tied the all-time GLIAC mark.
The Tech football team received a handful of votes in this week’s American Football Coaches Association Division II poll. It wasn’t enough to put them in the top-25. Three GLIAC teams are in the official ranking, including Grand Valley at number three… Ashland at number five… and Ferris State at number seven. The Huskies will host the Bulldogs on Saturday.
MLB
Justin Upton’s three-run homer in the top of the 11th inning powered the Detroit Tigers to a 5-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox yesterday afternoon. Upton’s blast broke a 2-2 tie. Chicago got one back in the bottom of the 11th, but Francisco Rodriguez struck out Tyler Saladino to end the game. Justin Verlander gave up two runs on eight hits over seven innings. He struck out 11. Miguel Cabrera had four hits for Detroit, including two solo home runs.
The Tigers play at Chicago again tonight. Matt Boyd will start against Miguel Gonzalez. Hear the first pitch at 8:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Cleveland lost yesterday, so The Tigers now trail the Indians by four and a half games in the American League Central Division. They are tied with the Orioles for the second wild card playoff position.
The Tigers have brought pitcher Mike Pelfrey off the disabled list. He’ll pitch out of the bullpen, for now. Starter Jordan Zimmerman gave up seven runs in a rehab start with Toledo yesterday.
The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Chicago Cubs 7-2 yesterday. Chicago broke the game open with four runs in the eighth inning off Ben Rowan and Rob Scahill. Chris Carter and Ryan Braun homered for Milwaukee.
