Tigers Sweep Twins – Friday Sports Wrap

James McCann had four hits, including a home run, as the Detroit Tigers completed a sweep of the Minnesota Twins with an 8-5 victory yesterday afternoon. McCann drove in three runs; Ian Kinsler and Victor Martinez each plated two. Daniel Norris pitched five shutout innings, then gave up a run in the sixth, and another before leaving in the seventh. Minnesota scored three off Kyle Ryan in the eighth.

The Tigers return home to host the Angels tonight. Justin Verlander will start against Ricky Nolasco. Hear the first pitch at 8:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Cleveland lost again, so the Tigers now trail the Indians by four and a half games in the American League Central Division.

Andrew McCutchen’s RBI single off Carlos Torres in the top of the 10th inning lifted the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 3-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers last night. Kirk Nieuwenhuis homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers entertain the Pirates again tonight. Matt Garza will pitch against Ryan Vogelsong.

High School
In high school volleyball tomorrow, Baraga and Ewen-Trout Creek compete at the Ontonagon Tip-Off Triangular.

The high school football season began locally last night, as Ewen-Trout Creek fell to Carney-Nadeau 36-26.

– Hancock entertains Lake Linden-Hubbell. Bulldogs’ players from the 1940s and ’50s are encouraged to attend, and will be honored at halftime. Hear the game on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Houghton travels to L’Anse.
– Calumet entertains Northland Pines in the annual Hall of Fame Game. Tomorrow, Tim Baroni, Al Eckhart, Greg Eckhart, Tim Frantti, Kristen (Hager) Peterson, Carl “Cookie” Johnson and Joseph A. Savini will be inducted into the Calumet High School Athletic Hall of Fame. The ceremony will start at 11:00 in the Calumet School Commons. The public is invited.
– Ontonagon travels to Superior Central.
– Baraga’s home football game against Stephenson has been canceled because of illness. It will not be made up.

The Lake Linden-Hubbell High School girls volleyball and basketball teams will hold a car wash today from 11:30 until 4:00. Look for them on the church side of the school. Donations will be appreciated.

Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s soccer team begins play tomorrow at 1:00 with an exhibition match at Northern Michigan University.

NFL
The Green Bay Packers play their third exhibition game tonight at San Francisco.

The Detroit Lions continue their preseason schedule tomorrow night at Baltimore.

Sisu Challenge
Sisu Challenge LogoThe second SISU Challenge will be held in the Chutes and Ladders area of Ray Kestner Waterfront Park tomorrow. The SISU Challenge features several obstacles, including a 10-foot rope climb wall, a mud pit, and a warped wall. Compete as an individual, or as a team. Houghton County Fair
The Houghton County Fair is still looking for contestants to compete in the Side by Side races tonight, and the Four Wheel Drive Tug of War tomorrow. If you’re interested, contact the fair office at the fairgrounds.

ATV Trail Detour
Beginning Monday, ATV Trail Three will be closed from the Gas Plant Road to the Laurium intersection for culvert replacement. It will remain closed until November 13th. The Keweenaw ATV Club has marked a detour around the construction site. Please follow the signs.
