The Kansas City Royals scored four runs in the first inning, and cruised to an 8-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers Saturday. Detroit starter Mike Pelfrey left the game with the bases loaded in the second inning. Reliever Dustin Molleken let a run score on a wild pitch, but then got a groundout to end the threat. The Tigers scored one in the first, and narrowed the gap to two on a two-run Ian Kinsler home run in the third. KC put the game away with three runs off Molleken and Kyle Ryan in the fifth inning.
The Tigers conclude that home set against Kansas City this afternoon. Michael Fulmer will face Yordano Ventura. Hear the first pitch at 1:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Outfielder Justin Upton will rejoin the Tigers today, after missing some time on the bereavement list. Detroit sent outfielder Steven Moya down to Toledo to make room.
An MRI has indicated that outfielder J.D. Martinez’ broken elbow is healing properly. He hopes to return to the lineup late this month.
The Milwaukee Brewers scored four runs in the first inning, and five in the third, and routed the Cincinnati Reds 9-1 Saturday. Hernan Perez and Jonathan Lucroy homered. Jimmy Nelson pitched seven shutout innings to get the win.
The Brewers play at Cincinnati again this afternoon. Zach Davies will pitch against Dan Straily.
Canal Run
Stephen Eles of Houghton won the Canal Run half marathon Saturday morning. Eles’ time of 1:14:35.5 was more than nine minutes faster than runner-up Mike Moloney from Clarkston, Michigan. Houghton’s Jacob Colling placed third. Kate McCloud of Hancock was the top women’s finisher, and Gwendolyn Grabig of Laurium was second. Ryan Normand from Tempe, Arizona, won the 10-mile run, with a time of 53:56.9. Jake Isaacson from Hancock was just over a minute back in second place, and Jonathan Kilpela from Houghton took third. Houghton’s Jennifer Dannenbring was the top women’s finisher, with Christy Hoppe from Hancock in second place. Mark Hallmann from Amasa won the five-mile run, with a time of 37:46.0. Emil Johnson from Baroda was 13 seconds off the pace. Shitaye Sam from Chassell was the top women’s finisher, and Shelly Galliah from Hancock took second. Karen Ham from Hubbell was the fastest finisher in the 10-mile walk. Chris Sochay from Calumet was the fastest man. Amy Hughes from Hancock was the first finisher in the five-mile walk. Mike Lahti from Hancock was the top men’s finisher.
