Team CC
The Team Copper Country hockey squad completed a sweep in pool play at the Midget AA Tier Two Tournament in Howell with a 3-2 victory over the Allen Park Huskies on Saturday. Jacob Cruse scored twice, and Reid Pietila once, as Team CC opened up a 3-0 lead. Allen Park tallied two third period goals to make it close. Ian Carroll stopped 20 of 22 shots to earn the win in net. Team CC launched 38 shots. On Friday, Team CC edged the Lansing Spartans 2-1, and then routed Dearborn Belle Tire 8-2. WCHA
Ferris State is the unlikely winner of the WCHA tournment. The fourth-seeded Bulldogs edged second-seed Minnesota State 2-1 in the title game Saturday in Grand Rapids. Ferris advanced to the final game by ousting top-seeded Michigan Tech 1-0 on Friday. The Bulldogs will receive the league’s guaranteed berth in the NCAA tournament. The full tournament field will be announced at noon today.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings won their third straight game, rallying from two goals down to defeat the Florida Panthers 5-3 Saturday night. Luke Glendening scored the game-winner midway through the second period. Dylan Larkin had a goal and an assist. Jimmy Howard stopped 23 shots in goal. With 10 regular-season games remaining, the Wings hold a three-point lead over Philadelphia in the race for the final Eastern Conference wildcard playoff spot. Detroit will skate at Tampa Tuesday night. Face-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons used a big fourth quarter to power past the Brooklyn Nets 115-103 Saturday night. Detroit’s bench led the way, with backup center Aron Baynes scoring 17 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, and Anthony Tolliver scoring all 17 of his points in the second half. With a dozen games remaining, Detroit trails Chicago by one game in the race for the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Pistons host the Bucks Monday night. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NCAA
There were fewer surprises in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament Saturday. The one significant upset was in the Midwest, where 11th-seeded Gonzaga ousted third-seeded Utah 82-59. Our tournament coverage continues today at noon on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
MLB
In spring training baseball Saturday, Detroit’s game against Miami was rained out. The Tigers split their squad for games against Atlanta and Washington this afternoon.
Daniel Norris was scheduled to start Saturday’s game, but had been scratched because of back stiffness. He’s expected to start Tuesday’s game. Meanwhile, team officials say recent x-rays of outfielder Cameron Maybin’s broken wrist indicate it is healing slowly. He will probably not be ready for opening day.
The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Los Angeles Angels 15-7 Saturday. Starter Wily Peralta was torched for 10 runs before leaving with two outs in the third inning. The Brewers will face the Dodgers today.
