Kings, Hornets to Class C District Title Game – Tuesday Sports Wrap

The boys high school basketball tournament opened last night…
– In Class C, Calumet advanced with a 51-36 victory over Hancock. L’Anse earned its first win of the season by beating Ironwood 40-37. The Purple Hornets trailed by nine at halftime, but worked their way back. With the score tied, and the clock ticking toward zero, Brett Mattson missed a shot from the paint. He grabbed the rebound, sank the putback shot while being fouled with one second on the clock, and then added the free throw to seal the win. Mattson led a balanced Hornets attack with nine points. Logan Fish added eight. The Copper Kings and Purple Hornets will meet for the district title tomorrow at 7:00 at Calumet. Our pregame coverage will start around 6:40 on 97.7 The Wolf and TheWolf.com.
– In Class D at Lake Linden-Hubbell, Chassell ousted Baraga 72-48. The Panthers will face Jeffers tomorrow at 5:30. Lake Linden got past Dollar Bay 48-40. Lucas Klein had 18 points and 17 rebounds for the Lakes, who will meet Ontonagon tomorrow at 7:30.
– In Class B, Escanaba dispatched Gladstone 67-49. The Eskymos will meet Menominee tomorrow night. Houghton had a first-round bye, and will host Kingsford tomorrow night. Pregame coverage will begin around 6:40 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

In girls high school tournament regional semifinals tonight…

– In Class C, Calumet will meet Negaunee at 6:00 in Marquette.

Michigan Tech hockey goaltender Jamie Phillips has been named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week. Phillips stopped 48 of 49 shots in the Huskies’ two games against Northern Michigan University last weekend. It’s his fifth Player of the Week award this season.

In Fort Meyers, Florida, the Finlandia baseball team lost to Gettysburg College 19-4, and Olivet College 10-3 yesterday. The Lions wrap up their spring trip today, with two games against Emerson College.

The Finlandia University men’s soccer team has introduced seven new players who will join the team next fall. They come from six different states and Puerto Rico. You can meet them here.

In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers lost to the New York Mets 7-3 yesterday. Starter Mike Pelfrey wasn’t sharp – he gave up a run on three hits and two walks before leaving with one out in the third inning. The Tigers face the Rays this afternoon. Hear the first pitch at 1:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the San Diego Padres 8-2 yesterday. Starter Taylor Jungmann left with one out in the second, after giving up a run on two hit and two walks. The Brewers will take on the White Sox this afternoon.
