In girls high school basketball last night…
– Houghton defeated Escanaba 66-48.Sloane Zenner scored 15 for the Gremlins.
– Hancock routed Bessemer 55-25. Taylor Pertile had 21 points.
– Calumet rolled over L’Anse 59-35. The Copper Kings remain unbeaten.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City stopped Ewen-Trout Creek 44-25.
– Jeffers shut down Baraga 37-24.
– Chassell held off Lake Linden-Hubbell 43-39. The Panthers led by six at halftime, but the Lakes hung tough, and took the lead midway through the fourth quarter. With the Lakes trailing by three and 18 seconds remaining, a three-point attempt by Carli Ongie that would have tied it clanged off the rim. Julia Pietila then sank a free throw to nail down the win for the Panthers. Pietila led Chassell with 14 points. Peyton Gast scored 13 for the Lakes.
In boys action last night, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City dumped Watersmeet 78-48.

MTU
Lindsay Winter scored a career-best 22 points, as the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team defeated Ferris State last night 74-53. The Huskies led by a dozen at halftime, then outscored the Bulldogs 26-12 in the third quarter to put the game away. Kylie Moxley added 18 points for Tech.
The Tech men’s team fell to Ferris 80-78 in overtime. The Huskies overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to force the extra period. Kyle Monroe led MTU with a career-high 35 points.
Both Tech teams will host Grand Valley State tomorrow. The women’s game starts at noon, and the men’s game tips off at 2:00.
The Huskies hockey team will host Lake Superior State for the Winter Carnival series. Face-offs are at 8:07 tonight, and 5:07 tomorrow night.
NMU
Both Northern Michigan University hoops teams fell to Grand Valley State last evening – the women 70-49, and the men 70-59. Both NMU teams will welcome Ferris State tomorrow.
The NMU hockey team hosts Alaska-Anchorage tonight and tomorrow night.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team entertains Marian University this weekend. Face-offs are at 7:15 tonight, and 4:00 tomorrow afternoon at the Houghton County Arena. The Finlandia women’s hockey team plays a single game at Marian University on Sunday.
Both Finlandia basketball teams play at Martin Luther College tonight, and Bethany Lutheran College tomorrow afternoon.
GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines visit the Eagle River Falcons tonight. The Wolverines will take on the Portage Lake Pioneers tomorrow night at 8:00 at Dee Stadium.
NHL
Jimmy Howard struggled in goal, as the Detroit Red Wings lost to the Florida Panthers 6-3 last night. Howard gave up five of the Florida goals, including three straight in the first 11 minutes of the game. The sixth was an empty-netter. Dylan Larkin scored twice for Detroit. The Wings host the Islanders tomorrow afternoon. Face-off is at 2:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons dominated the first half, then held on to beat the New York Knicks 111-105 last night. Detroit led by 24 at halftime before New York rallied to take the lead with two minutes remaining. A three-pointer by Anthony Tolliver got the Pistons back on track, and they never trailed again. Stanley Johnson led Detroit with 22 points. The Pistons play at Indianapolis tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
