Obituary: Winston P. Mercado Baez

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved father Winston P. Mercado Baez who left us on June 23th, 2024 at the age of 82 surrounded by his loving family and wonderful caregivers of The Omega House in his final moments. He was an affectionate, dedicated, and hardworking dad who always put his family’s needs ahead of his own. Born in Barceloneta, Puerto Rico, on October 10, 1941, married Lucia Melendez Rivera in 1963, moved to Sabana Seca, PR where they started a family, and lived there most of their lives before moving to Laurium, MI in 2017. Winston and Lucia were inseparable, enjoying activities such as listening to music, gardening, playing dominoes, and cooking. Above all, they cherished and loved spending time with their children Winston, Madeline, and Lucia.

He has finally reunited with the love of his life, Lucia Melendez Rivera, who preceded his passing on July 20, 2023.

They are survived by their children; Winston J. Mercado Melendez (Nydia Velez) of Carolina, Puerto Rico, Madeline Mercado Voelker (Paul), and Lucia I. Mercado Melendez (Christopher Llamas) from Laurium, Michigan. Their grandchildren; Bianca Mercado-Velez(Tyler), Michael LlamasMercado, Amanda Mercado-Velez (Deuris), Christine Llamas Maldonado, Vincent Llamas Mercado, Steven N. Voelker, and great-granddaughter Luna. As well as many brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Winston’s family would like to thank the Staff of the Omega House in Houghton, Dr. Wright and Dr. Labonte, the wonderful nurses and staff at UP Health System – Portage, UPCAP, and UPHP for the care and help given to him during his illness.   The Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Winston P. Mercado Baez falleció el 24 de Junio de 2024 en el Hogar Omega en Houghton, Michigan después de una corta enfermedad.  Winston finalmente se reunió con el amor de su vida, Lucía Meléndez Rivera, quien falleció el 20 de Julio de 2023. 

Winston nació en Barceloneta, Puerto Rico el 10 de Octubre de 1941 y él junto a Lucía, se mudaron a Michigan en el año 2017 haciendo Laurium su nueva residencia.  No había un día en el que ellos estuvieran separados y ambos disfrutaban de escuchar música, trabajar en el jardín, jugar dominos, pero sobre todo pasando tiempo con sus hijos a quienes querían inmensamente.

Les sobreviven sus hijos(as); Winston J. Mercado Meléndez (Nydia Velez) de Carolina Puerto Rico, Madeline Mercado Voelker (Paul), y Lucía I. Mercado Meléndez (Christopher) de Laurium, Michigan. Sus nieto(a)s; Bianca Mercado-Velez(Tyler), Michael Llamas Mercado, Amanda Mercado-Velez (Deuris), Christine Llamas Maldonado, Vincent Llamas Mercado, Steven Voelker y biznieta, Luna. En adición a muchos hermanos(as), sobrinos(as), primos (as), y otros familiares y amigos.

La familia de Winston le da su profundo agradecimiento a los empleados(as) del Omega House en Houghton, los Doctores Wright y Labonte, las maravillosas enfermeras(os), y equipo de trabajo de UP Health System – Portage, UPCAP, y UPHP por el cuidado y ayuda que le brindaron durante el tiempo de su enfermedad.
