Obituary: William L. Barnett

Visitation will be on Saturday, June 24th from 1-2:00 p.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home, and his funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Peter Suomela will officiate. A luncheon will follow at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Skanee Cemetery.

William L. Barnett, age 87, passed away on January 6th, 2023 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Detroit, MI on July 17th, 1935 to Edward Bohn and Bertha Wayrynen. He lived in South Range for a short time before moving to Skanee, MI and being adopted by Dayton Barnett. He went to Skanee School and graduated from l’Anse High School in 1953. In 1958 he was drafted by the Army and served through 1960.

On June 26th, 1965 he married Theresa Cousineau in Munising, MI. Bill and Theresa lived in Skanee until 2014 when they moved to L’Anse.

Bill sailed the Great Lakes for Oglebay Norton as a crane operator on two separate occasions. He worked construction for a few years and then in the logging industry as a skidder driver until he retired in 2000.

He is survived by his children Keith (Holly) Barnett of L’Anse and Nicole (Brian) Gruber of Milwaukee, WI; siblings Jean (Pete) Suomela of Aura, Miriam Paquet of L’Anse and sister-in-law Janet Barnett of Skanee; grandchildren Kelli (Mike) Johnson of L’Anse, Joshua (Maddie) Barnett of L’Anse and Sophie Gruber of Milwaukee, WI; great grandchildren Brynlee and Eli Johnson, and Dayton Barnett.

He is preceded in death by his wife Theresa, his brother James Barnett, Parents Dayton and Bertha Barnett, as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

A service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in the Skanee Cemetery. Jacobson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
