Wesley Ernest Kangas, age 96, died May 23, 2018 at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital.
He was born July 20, 1921 in Tapiola, Michigan, son of John and Anna Kangas.
He graduated from Calumet High School, Suomi College, and Garwin College in Detroit, Michigan.
He worked as an accountant for 9 years at Putnam Tool Co. in Detroit. In 1949 he moved to the Copper Country to work at Finnish Mutual Fire Insurance Co. as an accountant until retirement in 1983.
He was united in marriage to Helvi Marja Karsikas on August 23, 1951 in Toronto, Canada.
The couple made their home in the Calumet, Laurium area. They moved to Sun City, Arizona where they lived for 9 years, and returned to Houghton in 1998. Wesley worked part-time at the Daily Mining Gazette from 1999 to 2010.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Helvi; his brothers, Uno, Martin, Charles, Reino and Wilho; his sisters, Aili Torro and Agatha Raudio.
Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
Wesley was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church.
A funeral will be held at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Calumet on Saturday, May 26, 2018 with Pastor David Taivalkoski to officiate. Visitation will start Saturday morning at 9:30 AM until the time of service.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy donations can be made to the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Calumet, or the Omega House in Houghton.
