Wesley E. Maatta, 99, of Toivola, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 12, 2021, at Omega House, in Houghton.
He was born on July 1, 1921, in Toivola, a son of the late Andrew and Ida (Luukkonen) Maatta, and was a graduate of Calumet High School.
Wesley was employed at the White Pine Copper Mine, retiring from there.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during WWII.
He was married to the former Helen Kallioinen on May 6, 1944. She preceded him in death in 1993.
He is survived by a son, Rodney of Toivola; daughter, Connie Keranen of Wausau, Wisc.; daughter-in-law, Linda Maatta of Milan, Ohio; grandchildren, Jason, Steve, and Jenna Keranen (Chris Corbeil) all of Wausau, Wisc., Andrea (Scott) Briese of Port Washington, Wisc., Angie Wirth of Muskego, Wisc; numerous great grandchildren; brother, Melvin (Gertrude) of Houghton; sister, Adele (Brian) Taavola of South Range; brother-in-law, Bruce Taavola of Painesdale; niece and great-niece, Judy and Shelley Lindgren, among numerous other nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and wife, Wesley was also preceded in death by a son, Roger; granddaughter, Kimberly Maatta; brothers, Gordon and Reino; sisters, Irene, Jean and Eva; and a son-in-law, David Keranen.
Wesley loved spending time with family and working outdoors.
The family would like to thank the staff at Omega House for their compassion and care given to Wesley.
