Obituary: Virginia Massoglia

Virginia M. Massoglia, 92, originally from Laurium, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, April 9, 2020. She was a resident of Garden View Assisted Living in Calumet for the past 3 years.

Virginia was born on February 2, 1928 in Hancock, a daughter of the late John and Maria (Chiarvalli) Balconi. She attended Houghton schools, graduating Salutatorian of her class in 1946.

On September 12, 1953 she was united in marriage to Dominic DJ “Doc” Massoglia at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hancock. He preceded her in death on July 17, 1987.

She was employed as a Credit Manager for Montgomery Wards store in Houghton. Later she was the owner and agent of the Montgomery Wards store in Laurium until its closing in 1985.

She was a charter member of the Newman Club, now known as St. Albert the Great, and a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Calumet.

Virginia especially loved family reunions and travelling. She also enjoyed watching wrestling, playing bingo, and card games including poker, pinochle and cribbage. She also enjoyed laughing at a good joke.

Preceding her in death was her husband, and brothers; Dante Balconi, Charles Balconi, and Henry Balconi, and sisters; Rose Renaldi, Josephine Neher, Eleanor Chaput and Perene Wills.

Surviving are five children; Donald (Kathy) Mason of Fort Worth, TX, Michael (Tanya) Massoglia of Troy, MI, James (Michele) Massoglia of Chassell, MI, David (Colette) Massoglia of Rochester Hills, MI, and Mary (Richard) Smith of Lansing, MI: grandchildren; Patti, Christina, Rachel, Sarah, Jessica, Jason, Timothy, Crystal, Daniel, Sarah, Anthony and Jared: great grandchildren; Lily, Mckenzie, Zoey, Anderson, Riley, Lexi. She is also survived by other family and friends.

The Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet is assisting the family with the arrangements.

A funeral mass will be held at a future date and burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery.
