Obituary: Virginia E. Newman

Virginia Elaine Newman, a long-time resident of Cambria Street in Calumet, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2020, at Canal View in Houghton County. Virginia was born on 21 December 1934 the daughter of Emma (Gerstung) and George Cuber in Chicago Illinois. She was their third child and grew up in the Austin district of Chicago attending the Sacred Heart School. She enjoyed her piano lessons and became a gifted pianist, entertaining her children through the years with many piano recitals especially the “Blackhawk Waltz.”

In Cicero, Illinois on 18 November 1959, she married the love of her life, Gordon Newman. Eventually, the couple chose the Copper Country as their forever home. Virginia enjoyed working for the CLK School District, especially working with Jeremy Halonen as his aide and he became another son to her. She found her niche in the library with her very special friend Patty Hale. Patty helped her remain active for many additional years. Virginia spent her final years as a resident of Canal View.

She is preceded in death by her parents George Otto Cuber and Emma Gerstung Cuber. Her sister Vivian Cuber Ilk, and infant brother George Russell Cuber. Her children Arthur Enard Newman and Barbara Alice Newman, her son-in-law Ryan Jon Kilpela and Mary Demoss Newman her beloved daughter-in-law, and her grandchildren Alicia Noelle Newman, Donald William Elander, Jr., and Sharon Susanne (Niedholdt) Mullis.

Virginia is survived by her husband Gordon, and their children: Peg (Gene) Niedholdt, George Newman, Mary Anne (Vertin) Newman, Liisa (Barry) Koljonen, Jennifer (Craig) Oakes, Eric (Jennifer Smith) Newman, Sam (Julie) Newman, Liddy (Jamey) Markham, Carol (Bruce) Janckila, Michael (Joy) Newman, and Bob (Catherine) Newman. Virginia is also survived by her beloved cousin, Dickie Salamun, and her lifelong friend Barbara Knapczyk.

Virginia has left 51 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
