Obituary: Virgil R. Kissel, Jr.

Virgil R. Kissel, Jr., age 87 of L’Anse, MI passed away on Tuesday, November 15th, 2022 at his home with his family at his side.

He was the first born to Virgil and Blanche (Schibley) Kissel in Ashland, Ohio on March 8, 1935. The family always vacationed in Northern Michigan and eventually moved to Munising, MI. Virgil graduated from Mather High School in Munising in 1953. In 1956 they moved to L’Anse where his father was service manager at L’Anse Motor Co. In 1971 Virgil along with his brother and father opened Kissel Chevrolet Olds; retiring in 1999.

Virgil served in the US Army from 1958-1960. On April 12, 1958 he married Kathaleen Seratti in Baraga. In his free time, he designed and built a log cabin on Lake Superior where they enjoyed entertaining with their friends and family. He and his buddies cleared land and built a hunting log cabin called The Ravine River Hunting Lodge to which he was the last survivor of that group.

In his younger years he was active in the Lions Club, L’Anse Golf Club, and the Baraga County Snow Kats. He was an avid boater, enjoyed fishing and going to Isle Royal.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Kathaleen Kissel of L’Anse; sons Bob, Brian, and Greg of L’Anse; daughter Carmen Kissel of Burnsville, MN; grandchildren, Luke, Alex, and Zak of L’Anse, Kelsey Ross of Lake Oswego, OR, Jonathan of Council Bluffs, Iowa; sister Georgia (Chuck) Ramsay of Green Bay; sister-in-law Pat Kissel of Baraga; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents Virgil and Blanche Kissel; brothers, Ronald and Robert Kissel.

Visitation will be on Saturday, November 19th from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home. Baraga County Area Veterans will conduct military rites at 1:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service with Fr. Corey Litzner officiating. A luncheon will follow the funeral at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church Hall. Burial will be in the Baraga Cemetery.
