Obituary: Thatcher Markham

Houghton Canal

Thatcher Alan Markham, 12, of the Houghton Canal, died unexpectedly Monday, June 18.

He was born on November 12, 2005, in Hancock.

God took home a wonderful, caring, loving son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend. He was soft-spoken yet carried a confidence that couldn’t go unnoticed. Making all those who met him, like him. He was the light of his mother and father’s eyes.

Thatcher was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton and Atlantic Mine.

Thatcher could always be found in his front yard hanging off a dock with a fishing pole in his hand. He would go fishing at the drop of a hat, no matter what the weather was. It was his true passion. He was also a goalie in the CCJHA and loved to be on the ice. Among his hockey highlights was winning the MAHA Squirt B State Title in 2015.

Preceding him in death were his paternal grandparents, Jim and Margaret Markham, and uncle Glenn Peterson.

Thatcher is survived by his parents, Rodney and Joanne, 4 siblings – Drake 11, Sawyer 8, Grace 4, and Penn 10 months, grandparents, Jim and Karen Johnson of Big Traverse, 36 aunts and uncles, 97 first cousins, a large extended family, and numerous friends.

Thatcher would be very impressed with the enormous amount of support that his family received from his immediate and extended family, congregation, friends, community members and total strangers.

The gaping hole that he is leaving in the hearts of loved ones and friends will never be filled, but the assurance that he now gets to spend eternity with God and Jesus is of great comfort.

Funeral services for Thatcher will be held 1:00 pm Saturday, June 23, 2018, at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton with David Taivalkoski to officiate. Burial will be in the Oskar Cemetery.

Friends may call on Friday, June 22, 2018, from 4 to 8 pm at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton and on Saturday from 12 noon until time of services at the church.
