Obituary: Stuart A. Olson

TOIVOLA

Stuart A. Olson, 92, of Misery Bay, passed away peacefully at the Omega House on Sunday, November 25, 2018.

He was born November 28, 1925, in Tapiola, a son of the late Axel and Eva (Kallungi) Olson and attended the John A. Doelle School in Tapiola.

Stuart was a WWII Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1944-46, and was the recipient of two Bronze Stars.

On March 13, 1948, he married the former Evelyn Maki in Hancock. The couple resided in Misery Bay where they raised their children in the home Stuart built for his family.

Stuart worked for several years as a sawyer in the logging industry often spending time in logging camps during the winter months. He then joined the Michigan Carpenters Local 1510 working on projects for 50 years like the Portage Lake Lift Bridge and several Michigan Tech buildings, as well as other various jobs throughout Michigan and Wisconsin.

Following retirement in 1990, he continued to use his carpenter and woodworking skills until his health prevented him from doing so.

Stuart was a member of Range Apostolic Lutheran Church of South Range. He was a life member of Ranger Post 6165 VFW of South Range. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, saunas and reading, and especially enjoyed being with his two special buddies, Peanut and Mika. Stuart loved all sports. For many years he was manager of the baseball field which was home of the Toivola Twilight League baseball team. He was an avid fan of the Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions.

Stuart is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn of Misery Bay;

a son, Mike (Nancy) Olson of Misery Bay; a daughter, Ren (Paul) Hunter of Baltic; two grandsons, Brooks (Lindsay) Olson and Brady (Kelly) Olson; four great-grandchildren, Ahriana, Isabelle, Lynola and Edith Olson; two brothers, Robert (Jan) Olson of Tapiola and Pete (Gail) Olson of Tapiola; a sister, Anita (Wesley) Heikkinen of Wisconsin; a sister-in-law, LaVonne Olson of Tapiola; his good friend and neighbor, Stan “Mutti” Laurila of Toivola; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides his parents, Stuart was also preceded in death by four brothers, Phillip, Charles, Leonard and Andrew.

A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, November 28, 2018, at Range Apostolic Lutheran Church in South Range, with Pastor Chuck Bylkas to officiate. Visitation will be 1hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. Military rites will be conducted following the service. Spring burial will be in the Toivola Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Range Apostolic Lutheran Church or Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly in Stuart’s name.
