Sally Renee Brunk, “Miigwaniigabo” (standing feather woman), age 52 of Baraga, MI passed away on Wednesday, September 7th, 2022 at U.P. Health System, Marquette, MI.
She was born July 9, 1970 in L’Anse, MI daughter of Albert Sr. and Elizabeth (Kenosha) Brunk. Sally graduated from Baraga High School in 1988. She lived in Marquette for a short time while attending Northern Michigan University. Sally was a gifted writer and a published author. In 2020 she was the first runner up for the U. P. Poet laureate competition. She has given presentations at many of the local colleges. Along with writing, she enjoyed drawing, all sports and was a Detroit Lions and Michigan football fan, and spending time with her nieces and nephews. Sally was a member of the Lakeside Covenant Church in Baraga and was baptized in Lake Superior in 2013 along with her mother.
Surviving are her brothers, Robert (Vanessa) Brunk of Watersmeet, MI, David Brunk and Ronald Brunk of Baraga; sisters, Brenda Brunk and Nancy (Dave) Pawlowski of Baraga; sister-in-law Ann Brunk of Baraga; special friend Bethany Pinorsky of St. Paul, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are her parents Albert and Elizabeth; brother Albert Brunk; and sister Sharon Brunk.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 9th at the Ojibwa Seniors in Baraga, starting at 5 p.m. and continuing through the evening, with drumming at 6 p.m. A traditional Native funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 10th at 10 a.m. at the Ojibwa Seniors with Lawrence William officiating. The burial will be in the Baraga Cemetery. Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
