Obituary: Ruth Fitzgerald

Ruth Frances (Dirkse) Fitzgerald, 72, a resident of Superior Shores, passed away at her home on May 12 after a brief battle with cancer. 

She was born on December 30, 1950, in Grand Rapids, MI, to Thedford P. and Ruth V. (Imanse) Dirkse.  She earned an Associate degree as a medical secretary from Davenport College, and went on to work in the medical field. Her most important work was raising her children. 

Ruth and Steve married on June 30, 1973, and went on to live in Houghton, MI, Neenah, WI, and Niles, MI before returning to the Keweenaw in 1998. She enjoyed quilting, volunteering at Omega House, working in her gardens, and walking along the shore of Lake Superior collecting sea glass and rocks. Her family will cherish many happy memories of their reunions at her home. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, infant twin brothers, Richard and Edward, and niece Jennifer Barker. 

She is survived by her husband Steven C. Fitzgerald, son Christian D. Fitzgerald, daughter Leah M. Fitzgomez, and grandson Kai J. Fitzgomez. Also surviving her are three sisters: Joan (Harry) Byker, Carol (Willie) Singleton, and Mary Dirkse, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.  

A memorial service for Ruth will be held 11:00 am Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at S.S. Peter & Paul Lutheran Church of Houghton with Rev. Gehrke officiating.  Burial will be in the Liminga Cemetery. 

Friends may call on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, from 10 am until time of services at S.S. Peter & Paul Lutheran Church of Houghton.
