Obituary: Rudolph George Kump

Calumet – Rudolph “Rudy” George Kump, age 85, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 31, 2020 at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital where he had been a patient for four days. He was born on February 22, 1935 in Raymbaultown, the son of Rudolph and Mary (Elenich) Kump. He attended Sacred Heart Grade School and was a member of the Sacred Heart High School Class of 1952. During high school, Rudy worked for Marta Bakery making donuts. After high school he was employed with Locatelli Construction. He also served with the Michigan National Guard for over fifteen years, during which time his unit was called to help during the Detroit riots. In 1965 Rudy purchased W.F. Milford Lumber Company on Pine Street. His hard work can be seen throughout the Copper Country, and he would say no job was too big. One of his larger projects was salvaging over seventy miles of railroad for C&H after they closed. Later he owned Rudy’s Lumber and Supply on Mine Street. After retiring he enjoyed spending time at his property, MacNaughton’s working on various projects. Rudy was an active member of Sacred Heart Church. He was on the Finance Council and taught religion classes for many years. He was also an altar server on Friday evenings at St. Paul the Apostle Church for Mass and Adoration. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus since high school. Rudy is survived by two brothers, Francis of Calumet and Edward (Marlene) of Orchard Park, Illinois as well as two sisters, Barbara (Ralph) Gasperich of Glenshaw, Pennsylvania and Jane (Joseph) Warren of White Bear Lake, Minnesota. He is also survived by his uncle Frank Elenich of Canal View Medical Care Facility and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, John Paul, and his sister-in-law Mary Kump. Visitation for Rudy will be held on Friday, June 12th, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ryan Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 13th at 6 p.m. at the St. Paul the Apostle Church with Rev. Fr. Gracious Pulimoottil to officiate. Burial will be Monday June 15th at 10 a.m. at the Lake View Cemetery
