Rodney F. “Rod” Mattila, 62, a resident of the Houghton Canal Road, passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday evening, December 5, 2018, with his loving family by his side.
He was born August 3, 1956, in Calumet, a son of Frederick and Mary Lou (Eckloff) Mattila, and was a 1974 graduate of the Houghton High School.
Rod worked as an electrician for over 25 years with IBEW Local 219.
He was a member of the Local Waterfront Authority. He loved music. During the 70’s, he was singer with the local band, Saint. Rod coached Copper Country Jr. Hockey and fast pitch softball. He enjoyed boating and vacationing on warm tropical beaches. Rod loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandkids.
Rod is survived by his loving companion of over 31 years, Pam (Turner) Shahnaz. He is also survived by his mother, Mary Lou; two daughters and one son, Melissa “Girlie” Springer, Bruce “Bru” (Kristine “Dilly”) McLean, Zohreh “Doodler” (Radayl “Dell”) Richardson; three grandchildren, Ryan Nelson, Zahra and Amir Richardson; his grand-doggy, Bongo; three sisters, Shari Ringler, Starr Medlyn, Penny Mattila; his mother-in-law, Carmyn Turner; two brothers-in-law, Larry Turner and Paul (Sheri) Turner; a sister-in-law, Gina (Mark) Carver; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Rod was preceded in death by his father, Frederick; his father-in-law, Al Turner; and his brother-in-law, Don Turner.
