Obituary: Roddy Haanpaa

Roddy Michael Haanpaa, age 56 of Elo, Michigan passed away on Saturday, January 27th, 2024 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

He was born July 6, 1967 in L’Anse, MI son of William and Nancy (Salo) Haanpaa. Roddy grew up in Herman, MI and graduated from L’Anse High School in 1986. He attended Northern Michigan University studying refrigeration and air conditioning. Roddy worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for W.B. Thompson in Iron Mountain for a few years. He then started his own logging company, Roddy Haanpaa Logging.

Haanpaa Logging sponsored a Little League Baseball team over the years. Roddy also enjoyed supporting his family over the years at various sporting events. He liked a good fire and conversation, and enjoyed fishing, farming, and accompanying his fiance Tracy when she was Barrel Racing with her horses. Roddy and Tracy lived on their farm in Elo where they enjoyed raising horses and chickens, and grew a big vegetable garden.  He had the biggest, most generous heart and will be missed very much by family and friends.

Surviving are his father and step mother William (Patricia) Haanpaa of L’Anse; Fiance Tracy Hoskins of Elo; siblings, David (Nancy) Haanpaa of Aura, MI, Tracy (Rich) LaPlante of Negaunee, MI, Bill (Danielle) Haanpaa Jr of Negaunee; aunts and uncles; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Sharing in the grief of the Haanpaa family are Dave and Joyce Hoskins and their extended family. Roddy had become a beloved family member and he will be sadly missed by them all

Preceding him in death are his mother Nancy Haanpaa and sister Shelley Bennett.

Visitation will be on Saturday, February 3rd from 10-11:00 a.m. at the Grace Free Lutheran Church in Pelkie, MI. His funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Dave Hoskins officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church hall. The burial will be in the spring in the Herman Cemetery. Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
