Obituary: Robert Spahn

Robert J. Spahn, 85, a resident of Liminga, peacefully passed away Sunday, December 26, 2021, at home surrounded by family.

He was born on July 2, 1936, in Chicago, IL, a son of the late Leo and Mary (Hefner) Spahn. Robert was a graduate of St. Alphonsus High School. He then attended Illinois Institute of Technology and then Michigan Technological University to receive a degree in Physics and his PHD in Physics from Michigan State University.

Mr. Spahn was united in marriage to the former Marjorie Doederlein. The couple moved to Columbus, Ohio for a short time while Robert worked for North American Aviation. The couple moved to the Copper Country when Robert accepted a faculty position at Michigan Technological University residing in Dollar Bay & Chassell. In 1988, Marjorie preceded Robert in death. Mr. Spahn was able to retire from the Mathematics Department of Michigan Technological University in 1996. For the past 14 years, he has made his home in Liminga.

Mr. Spahn was a faithful member of the Catholic Faith. He was very talented and enjoyed self-learning many skills over the years from plumbing and electrical to building computers. He enjoyed working on different projects and spending time with his family and friends.

Preceding him in death were his wife, his son Matthew, his parents, and his brothers: Donald and Richard.

Brian (Thresa) Spahn of Plymouth, MI

6 grandchildren

Several nieces, nephews and cousins

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 am Saturday, June 4, 2022, at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton with Fr. John Martignon to officiate. Burial will be in the Chassell Cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday, June 4, 2022, from 10:00 am until time of services at the church.

Robert’s family would like to thank the staff of Portage Home Health and Hospice along with his caregivers Donna, Jessica & Lucy and his good friend Dave for the care and assistance given to him.
