Robert W. “Bucky” Ovist, 86, a resident of the Houghton Canal passed away Wednesday evening December 22, 2021, at the UP Health – Portage Hospital shortly after being admitted.
He was born on September 12, 1935, in Hancock, a son of the late William and Irene (Lampinen) Ovist. He was raised in Onnela and was a graduate of the Houghton High School with the class of 1953.
Following high school, Mr. Ovist moved to the Flint area to work in the car factories.
On November 17, 1962, he was united in marriage to the former Elizabeth “Betty” Lexson. The couple moved to make their home on the Houghton Canal to raise their family. On February 1, 2009, Betty preceded Bucky in death.
Bucky had worked for Herman Gundlach Contracting until a workplace accident forces his early retirement.
Bucky enjoyed visiting with family and friends his warm smile would welcome anyone for a friendly conversation. He enjoyed time outdoors hunting, fishing and the annual trips to Isle Royal. Bucky was a former member of the Stanton Fire Department and helped build the fire hall.
Preceding him in death were his wife Betty, his parents, and his sister Betty Meyers.

A time to remember Bucky and share stories will be held Thursday December 30, 2021, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock from 4 to 7:00 pm.
Spring burial will be in the Oskar Cemetery.
