Obituary: Robert M. Mattfolk

UPDATE: A graveside blessing and Military Honors will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at Mt Calvary Cemetery in Lake Linden with Fr. Jubish Joseph and the Copper Country Veterans Association officiating.

Robert M. Mattfolk, 76, a resident of Dollar Bay passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Green Bay, WI, following a short illness.

     He was born on July 12, 1946, in Detroit, MI, a son of the late Leo and Thursa (Doemer) Mattfolk.  The family moved to make their home in Dollar Bay and Bob attended the Dollar Bay Schools graduating with the class of 1964.

      Mr. Mattfolk was a veteran having served with the United States Army during the Viet Nam War.

     Robert began his working career at Sven Backman’s Sawmill and was a bus driver for the Dollar Bay Schools.  He then became the Manager for Pat’s IGA in Calumet until his retirement.  Bob then drove bus for the Intermediate School District in his retirement and had been the Osceola Township Water Supervisor for the past 35 years. 

      Mr. Mattfolk was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Dollar Bay, has been a 45-year member of the Dollar Bay Fire Department having served as a past chief for a number of years.  He enjoyed camping with his family vacationing in Mexico, and working on various projects. Bob also enjoyed watching MTU Hockey, the Detroit Red Wings & Detroit Lions. He was a Life member of Rangers Post #6505 VFW of South Range. And was active with the Copper Country Veterans Association.

      Preceding him in death were his parents, his brother Jim Syze, his mother & father-in-law: Willard and Dorothy Rheault; his brothers-in-law: Marvin Howell and Ronald Haiss and his sister-in-law: Joanne Rheault.

     Surviving are:

            His wife: Sharon Mattfolk of Dollar Bay

            His daughters: Wendy Mattfolk of Dollar Bay

                                    Cassie (Greg) Massie of Baraga

            His grandchildren: Jensen, Brad, Hayley, Amber, Jason, and Maxwell.

            His brother: Leo “Butch” (Tina) Mattfolk of Dollar Bay

            His sisters: Diane Howell of Washington, MI

                              Edla (Davey) Poirer of Lake Linden

            His brothers-in-law: Carl Rheault of Lake Linden

                                             Bruce Rheault of Lake Linden

            His sisters-in-law: Pauline Haiss of Green Bay, WI

                                         Gladys (Bob) Collins of Ishpeming

            Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends

     A prayer service for Bob will be held 6:00 PM Tuesday, January 3, 2022, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock with Rev. Fr. Jubish Joseph to officiate.  Spring burial with Military Honors conducted by the Copper Country Veterans Association will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery of Lake Linden.

     Friends may call on Tuesday, January 3, 2022, from 12 noon until time of services at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock.
