Obituary: Robert L. Scholie, Sr

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Robert Lewis Scholie, Sr. 90 and Janice Eileen (Moll) Scholie 86 of Naples, FL. Janice passed away January 8, 2024 and Robert followed her into eternal life on January 13, 2024. Bob and Jan were former residents of Warren, MI and were also resided and were business owners in Hancock, MI.

Robert was born on March 11, 1933 in Detroit, MI to Samuel and Lila (Karling) Scholie. He graduated from East Detroit High School in 1951 and soon after joined the Air Force and was stationed at Fairchild AFB Spokane, WA. While in the military he also attended and graduated from Gonzaga University in 1956. Upon returning home he embarked on a 20-year teaching career in the Detroit Public School system. During that time, he received his Master’s degree from Wayne State University. After retiring from teaching, he and Jan were co-owners of Hancock Coca-Cola Bottling Company from 1977-1997.

Janice was born on February 7, 1937 in Danville, IL to George and Evelyn (Hakes) Moll. She moved to St Clair Shores MI and graduated from South Lake High School in 1955. She was employed as a bank teller and then became a stay-at-home mom until she and Bob purchased Hancock Coca-Cola Bottling Company where she ran the office from 1977-1997.

Bob and Jan were united in marriage on August 12, 1961 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Roseville, MI. They were blessed to have three children, Robert, Jr., Lynne, and Gary. They raised their family in Warren, MI until relocating to Hancock, MI in 1977. They were snow birds and spent summers in Hancock and winters in Naples, FL until becoming full time Florida residents in 2016.

Bob and Jan shared a mutual lifetime love of Christ and served many roles within the Church at both St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in East Detroit and SS. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church in Hancock/Houghton. They raised their children in a loving, Christian environment and gave them the tools to be successful in life.

Bob and Jan enjoyed playing tennis regularly and Bob was an avid baseball and basketball player in his younger years. Bob also gave his time as a Little League coach and was a high school sports official for 40+ years, winning the prestigious Vern Norris Award from the MHSAA for his contributions as an official.

Bob and Jan are survived by children-

Son Robert L. Scholie, Jr. of Hancock and son Brandon

Daughter Lynne M. (Wayne) Smith of Chesterfield, MI

Son Gary A. (Karen) Scholie of Hancock and daughters Emilie and Sydnie

Siblings/In laws Paul and Nancy Nyquist

Sally Rajkowski

As well as numerous nieces and nephews

They were pre deceased by their parents and brothers in law Gene Kuske and Don Rajkowski.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00pm on Saturday June 22, 2024 at SS. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church 1010 Madelaine St. Houghton, MI with Pastor Dave Weber officiating.

Visitation will be from 10am until time of service, with a luncheon at the Church following in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers gifts can be made to SS. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church in Bob and Jan’s memory.
