Obituary: Richard Strieter

Richard “Rick” Strieter, 77, of Lake Linden, passed away at his home on October 6, 2021, after a long illness.
He was born on October 26, 1943, a son of Walter and Lucille (Kaupila) Strieter. He was a 1961 graduate of Dollar Bay High School.
Rick joined the Navy Reserves while still in high school and went on to active duty with the Navy, soon after graduation. He served during the Vietnam era and the Cuban Missile Crisis. He served aboard the USS Simon Lake, USS Canopus, USS Forrestal, USS John F. Kennedy, and the USS Independence. He retired from the Navy on March 31, 1980, after 20 years of active duty.
From there, Rick and his family returned to Upper Michigan. He attended Michigan Tech, earning 2 associates degrees in Civil and Electrical Engineering Technologies. He then worked for MDOT for 20 years as a Highway Inspector, retiring in 2007.
On July 2, 1966, he was married to Gloria Balowaara in Calumet.
He was a member of the Dollar Bay VFW, American Legion Post 90, and the Copper Country Veterans, providing Military Rites for many local deceased Veterans. He was active in many 4th of July Parades. He had been a member of the Dollar Bay First Lutheran Church until it closed. He was now a member of Faith Lutheran in Calumet.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, a son-Richard, Jr., a sister-Karen Statler, and brother-Jan Strieter, Sr.
Richard is survived by: his wife-Gloria of Lake Linden; 3 children-Daniel (Julie) of Superior Twp, MI, Juliana (Monica) Strieter of Arlington, VA, and Neil (Ashlee) of Coburntown; 6 grandchildren-Maddison and Leah Beach, Emma, Isaiah, Nathan, and Sophie Strieter; 3 brothers-Ted (Kay), Doug (Jane), and Kim; 3 sisters-Kathy (Alan) Salmela, Kristine Michaelson, and Susan Joy Strieter, sister-in-law-Sue Strieter; along with numerous other relatives.
The funeral service will be at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, October 14 at the Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden with Pastor Jared Howard to officiate. Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. until the start of the funeral at the funeral home.
Burial will be at the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Lake Linden, where the Copper Country Veterans will conduct Military Rites.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Faith Lutheran Church for the roof support project.
