Obituary: Raymond R. Aho

TAPIOLA

Raymond R. Aho, 82, a resident of Bear Creek Road in Tapiola, passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, February 5, 2019, with family by his side.

He was born August 21, 1936, in Trimountain, a son of the late Nestor and Ilmi (Peltola) Aho and was a graduate of the John A. Doelle High School.

Ray married the former Dorothy Colombe on January 21, 1967, at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in Houghton.

Ray was employed for 25 years at the Pelkie Co-op as a feed truck driver. Following retirement from the Pelkie Co-op, Ray worked for two years at Pettibone in the cylinder shop.

Ray was a longtime member of the Otter Lake Sportsman’s Club and served for 30 years on the Otter Lake Volunteer Fire Department. Ray was a pitcher on the Otter Lake Sportsman’s Club over 50 Slowpitch Softball League for several years and had a record of 136 wins, 39 losses and won many league championships. He also enjoyed playing horseshoes and was known as “The Shark”. Ray was a self taught guitar and piano player. He also played the mandolin. He bought his first mandolin at the age of 14 and was a loved music performer in the community. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, vegetable gardening, picking berries and ran a hobby sawmill.

Ray is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Tapiola; a son, Robert of Tapiola; two daughters, Amy (Paul) Wood of Hancock, and Doreen Pleimling of Tamarack City; four grandchildren, Christine (Derek) Perreault of Hubbell, Felicia Bass of Dodgeville, Brittany Ferguson of Manchester, Iowa and Chase Ferguson of Indianapolis, Indiana; and four great-grandchildren, Lillian, Lucas and Levi Perreault and Camille Bass; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Ray was also preceded in death by two sisters, Helmi and Irene; and a brother, Nestor.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 10, 2019, at the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range, with Pastor Michael Laakko to officiate.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Spring burial will be in the Elo Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Antila Funeral Service, Inc. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at antilafuneral.com.
