Obituary: Raymond Dell Douglas

Raymond Dell Douglas, age 82, a resident of Calumet, Michigan passed away peacefully on Monday, January 15, 2024, at UP Health Systems in Marquette Michigan.  Raymond was born on December 31, 1941, in Kalamazoo, MI to Raymond Elden Douglas and Harriette (Hollowell) Douglas.

He graduated with the class of 1959 from Portage High School, Portage Michigan.  After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS. Pandemus, out of Charleston S.C. during the Cuban Missile Crisis; he was honorably discharged in 1963.  Raymond went on to attend Western Michigan University, graduating in 1968, and moving to the CLK district where he taught biology and life sciences until retirement.  Raymond also taught Biking and Biology & Geology Classes in the summer Youth program at Michigan Technological University for several years, coached 7th and 8th grade track and field for many years, and was an assistant coach for hockey, little league, T-ball, and flag football.

Ray was an avid hunter, trapper, and fisherman and supported several area sportsmen’s organizations.  His enthusiasm for life and his wonderful story telling ability will be greatly missed by his wife Virginia, daughter Kelly (Christian) Douglas-Jones of Council Bluffs IA, R. Christopher (Julie) Douglas of Grand Ledge MI, Jason Douglas and Carol Grindley of San Francisco CA, Joshua (Michelle) Douglas of Lowell MI, 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, siblings William (Georganne) Douglas, Susan Douglas, Christy (Ed) O’Neill, Mike (Debbie) Olvitt, and Mellissa Olvitt.

Family will be holding a private celebration of life.  In lieu of an expression of sympathy, donations to our local Veteran’s association or your favorite charity are encouraged.

Erickson-Crowley-Peterson is assisting the family with arrangements.
