Philip Richard Nankervis, loving husband, father, and grandfather, age 79, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2022, surrounded by his family following a brief illness.
Philip was born on October 2, 1943, in L’Anse Michigan to the late William “Bill” Nankervis and Gertrude (Toyras) Nankervis Elmblad. He was a 1961 graduate of L’Anse High School. After graduation he began working for Celotex Corporation and after receiving a forestry certificate from the University of Minnesota, he moved to their forestry division. In February 1962, Philip was hired by Mead Paper as a forester and retired as their Peshekee Woodyard District Land Manager in 2002. In 1964, he joined the Michigan Army National Guard where he served for six years. In 1968, Philip was introduced to the love of his life, Barbara, at a wedding at the Skanee Town Hall. On August 15, 1970, they were wed at the L’Anse Lutheran Church. In 1972, they welcomed their only daughter Tammy and nine years later they welcomed their son William “Billy”.
Philip was a lover of nature and enjoyed taking rides around the block in Skanee looking for deer. He had a passion for making homemade wine, enjoyed watching the sunsets from his property, spending time with his friends, had a knack for carpentry and with the help of his brother built the houses they lived in and above all else he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Jordan and Meaghan, whom he loved very much.
He is survived by his wife Barbara of Skanee, daughter Tammy (Shane) Frazier of Beavercreek Ohio, and son William Nankervis of Skanee; his grandchildren, Jordan of Marquette and Meaghan Frazier of Beavercreek OH; brothers, Clifford (Dorothy) Nankervis of Skanee, and James Nankervis of Ishpeming; sisters, Jane Elmblad of L’Anse and Rita Erickson of Skanee; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Philip was preceded in death by his father, William “Bill” Nankervis, his mother Gertrude (Toyras) Nankervis Elmblad, and sisters Gloria and Elaine Nankervis.
Family and friends whose lives Philip touched are invited to the Jacobson Funeral Home for visitation from 10-12:00 PM on Saturday, December 17th. His funeral service will be at 12:00 PM at the funeral home with burial in the spring in the Skanee Cemetery.
Any monetary donations received will be donated to the Mariucci Beacon House in Marquette Michigan in honor of Phil.
