Obituary: Paul Donald Winquist

Paul “Ozzie” Winquist of Copper City, Michigan passed away on July 4, 2023, at Gardenview Assisted Living in Calumet, Michigan. Paul was born on October 3, 1930, in Kearsarge, Michigan to Frederick Winquist and Helen (Perreault) Winquist.

Paul graduated from Calumet High School in 1948. He was a proud veteran who served his country as an infantry man having served in the Korean War.   He married Lucille Kraemer who preceded him in death in 1984  He married Judy Heikkila in 1993.  Paul worked as a head serviceman for 37 years at Peninsular Gas Company until his retirement in 1992. Paul was also a co-owner with his father and operator of Keweenaw Amusements. He provided pool tables, pinball machines and juke boxes to all the local restaurants and bars.  He also had a love for baseball and was involved in twilight, slow-pitch, and fast pitch. He was also a player manager, coach, and umpire for 40 years.   He loved traveling with his wife Judy, seeing many places and wintering in Florida.  He also loved to bowl at Millers Lanes, was an avid Lions, Tigers, and Red Wings fan. He loved to go skiing, skating and snowmobiling with his grandkids  He enjoyed swimming and playing horseshoes at McLain’s on a sunny afternoon. He also loved to stream fish. He was very well known and liked by everyone he met through his work, sports, and community involvement. No matter where he went he ran in to someone he knew.  Paul also served on the Calumet Township Board for 20 years.

Paul is preceded in death by his parents Frederick Winquist and Helen (Perreault) Winquist, wife Judy Winquist, brother James “Gar” Winquist, and sisters Loretta Paulson and Darlene Talvensaari.

Paul is survived by his son Jim (Debbie) Winquist, daughter Nancy (Chris) Crouch and step-son Kevin (Kathy) Heikkila.  Paul is also survived by his grandchildren Stacy (Terry) Brey, Chad Crouch, Bryan Winquist and Sarah Winquist, and his great-grandchildren Kali, Kayden, McKenzie, Dylan, Tarynn and Maari and step grandchildren Nathan and Kirsi, along with his brother in law Bob Talvensaari and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  

A funeral service for Paul Winquist will take place at 12:00 pm on Friday, July 7, 2023, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Calumet, Michigan. A visitation will take place from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm on Friday, July 7, 2023, at Faith Lutheran Church in Calumet, Michigan. The burial will take place following the service in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet, Michigan.
