Obituary: Paul A. “Paavo” Raasakka

Paul A. “Paavo” Raasakka, 84, a resident of Hancock passed away Wednesday October 21, 2020, at UP Health – Portage Hospital following a short illness.

He was born on September 16, 1936, in Haaparanta, Finalnd, a son of the late Yrjo and Aili (Autio) Raasakka. As a child he moved with his family to make their home in Hancock. Paul was a graduate of the Hancock High School and attended Michigan Technological University.

On January 30, 1960, he was united in marriage to the former Louise Kuusisto. The couple resided in Hancock where they raised their family. On October 17, 2013, Louise preceded Paul in death.

Paul had worked for various contractors in the area as a pipefitter and carpenter. He then retired from the maintenance department of the Houghton County Medical Care Facility.

Mr. Raasakka was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton. He enjoyed fishing, taking walks and visiting with family and friends.

Preceding him in death were his wife, his stillborn grandson and his parents.

His brother: Ben (Margaret) Raasakka of Florida
Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins

A graveside service for Paul will be held 1:00 pm Saturday October 24, 2020, at the Lakeside Cemetery of Hancock with Pastor David Taivalkoski to officiate.
