Obituary: Nanette M. “Nannie” Beck

As received from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel:

Our beloved Nannie left this world unexpectedly and far too soon as a result of a tragic boating accident on Saturday, June 8, 2024. Nanette Marie Beck brightened the world when she was born in L’Anse, MI on October 17, 1972 to her parents Darlene Genschow and Rory Elmblad. She felt blessed to be the mother of Ashley Beck, Kassidey Beck, and Matthew Beck II (Ace). She was madly in love and currently ‘rez-married’ to her fiancé Matthew Cowles, and she cherished her previous husband Matthew Beck I.

Nannie was a proud citizen of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC) and grew up in Zeba, MI. She graduated from L’Anse High School and attended Finlandia University, Northern Michigan University, and the Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College. Throughout the years, she was always willing to contribute to the community and was employed in various positions for KBIC and at several local establishments. She was a member of the Baraga American Legion Post #444 Ladies Auxiliary and Honor Guard, Baraga County Pool League, and the KBIC Powwow Committee.

Nannie loved life, she deeply appreciated nature and tried to spend much of her time outdoors. She was proud to have traveled to all but two states in the U.S. and had plans to visit them all. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and was known for beating us all with her skills in bowling, playing pool, cribbage, and cornhole. She especially took pleasure in hunting, fishing, DIY-ing, gardening, riding her Harley, and watching her Packers. Go Pack Go!

She will be most remembered for her infectious smile and heart of gold. Family and friends meant everything to her! She spent 25 years opening her home to assist in raising her brothers, nieces, and nephews. She touched the lives of so many and was always there to help whenever anyone needed.

In addition to her mother, children, and fiance, she is loved and will be terribly missed by her brothers Robert (Harmony) Rajacic, Alan (Dae Fawn) Rajacic, Travis Rajacic, and Ryan Elmblad, ‘Seesta’ Liz Julio, ‘Bestie’ Kris Brunk, Aunties Debbie Parrish and Garen Waterbury, Uncles Bob Genschow and Kent Kruse, as well as by countless cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

We are comforted knowing that her previous husband, father, stepfather Alan Rajacic Sr, grandparents Elizabeth Genschow, Ferdinand Genschow, Norma Osterman, and Roderick Elmblad, Aunties JoAnne Racette and Gladys Genschow, Uncle Pat Racette, cousin Rick Geroux, and numerous others are there to greet her in the spirit world.

Gi’zaagin Geezhikode’, gigawaabaamin miinawaa!

The traditional fire will be burning at Nannie’s home through Thursday. A celebration of life and potluck luncheon will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2024, at Baraga Legion Post #444, Baraga. Interment will take place at the Pinery Cemetery, L’Anse at a later date.
