Obituary: Nancy Kauma

Nancy Rae Kauma, 86, a resident of Chassell, passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at her home with her family by her side.

Nancy was born on August 1, 1937, in Grand Rapids, Michigan to the late William and Mildred (Hart) Weaver. She was raised in the Lansing area and graduated from Eastern High School with the class of 1955.

Nancy worked as a bank teller at The Bank of Lansing until she was married. She met Toivo Kauma while he was working for the Michigan DNR in Lansing. They were united in marriage on September 25, 1976. That October, they moved to Chassell where they would make their home. Nancy was affectionately known as the “Home Engineer” as she took on all tasks. She enjoyed flowers, cooking, and baking. She was known for her sour cream cookies and Finnish spice cake. She also enjoyed knitting with the Sew Irresistible knitting group in Houghton. Toivo preceded her in death on March 29, 2014

Mrs. Kauma was a member of the Range Apostolic Lutheran Church in South Range where she was active with the ladies group.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings: Katherine (Bob) Walker of Lansing, William Weaver of Republic and Robert Weaver of Lansing;  infant sister; Mary Joyce, and a nephew; Andy Weaver.

Nancy is survived by her son: Paul (Melanie) Kauma of Chassell; Grandchildren: Luke and Sam Kauma of Chassell; Sisters-in-law: Anne Weaver of Marquette & Sybil Weaver of Lansing; Numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral Services for Nancy will be held at 1pm, Thursday, August 1, 2024, at the Range Apostolic Lutheran Church in South Range with Revs. Chuck Bylkas and Arvo Onermaa to officiate. Burial will take place in the Chassell Cemetery.

Friends may call on Thursday, August 1, 2024, from 12 noon until the time of services at the church.

The family would like to thank Aspirus at Home and the caregivers who made it possible for her to stay home Jenny, Donna, Jackie, Krystal, Mary and Ivorie.
