Obituary: Michele M. Kerban

As received from Memorial Chapel Funeral and Cremation Service:

In Loving Memory of Michele Kerban

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Michele Kerban, a cherished soul who touched the lives of many. Michele left this world on July 18th, 2023 at the age of 79, surrounded by her loving family and friends.

Michele was born in Hancock, Michigan to Michael and Ann Kerban [Urmas]. She graduated from Hancock High School and Northern Michigan University.

Professionally, Michele was a dedicated teacher for 32 years.  She taught in Chassell, Calumet, California, Hancock, and Houghton, but most of her career was dedicated to South Range Elementary School.  She had a passion for teaching reading, traveling around the state conducting professional presentations on reading strategies.  She earned honors including the Michigan Reading Association Outstanding Reading Educator, IRA Literacy Award, and the Adams Township Teacher of the Year. Her true gift however, was in her compassion for her students. She went out of her way to make a personal connection with every student, addressing any challenge they may have.  She enjoyed mentoring other teachers, and inspired several of her students to become teachers themselves.

Michele was a shining beacon of light in her community and to her friends, always extending a helping hand to those in need. She possessed a genuine and infectious warmth that brightened the lives of everyone she encountered. Her selflessness and unwavering support knew no bounds, and she was never hesitant to lend an ear, offer guidance, or provide comfort.

Above all else, Michele’s love for her family was the cornerstone of her life. She was a dedicated mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. She was often the source of family hijinx and laughter.  She was one of the legendary 5 Kerban sisters, who shared clothes, countless fun times, and unconditional love.  Big family gatherings were a source of joy for Michele. She was the first to seek out and welcome new family members who might be hesitant around the boisterous group who served Lebanese food.

Michele’s memory and love will forever be treasured by her children, Gary (Margy) Bailey and Lynnette (Karl) Borree, her grandchildren, Alyse Bailey, Tate Bailey, Bailey Borree, Jack Borree and Chloe Borree; her sisters, Judy Pleshe, Janet Wilkowski, Mary Eckhart and Dee Moore, and many nieces and nephews who played an important role in her life. Her loss will also be deeply felt by her numerous friends and former colleagues. The family would like to thank the Bluffs Senior Community and staff for providing so much joy and support for Michele in recent years.

Though we mourn Michele’s departure from this world, we find solace in the cherished memories she leaves behind. Her legacy of love, kindness, and compassion will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

A celebration of Michele Kerban’s life will take place on Thursday, July 27th at the Chassell Township Park pavilion.  Visitation will be held from 2-4 pm, with a service at 4pm followed by dinner at the pavilion.  In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Simple Kindness for Youth (SKY) in Michele’s honor.

As we say our final goodbyes, we take comfort in knowing that Michele’s spirit will forever shine bright in our hearts. May she rest in eternal peace
