Obituary: Michael Rein

Michael J. Rein, 71, a resident of Calumet passed away on Sunday August 15, 2021 at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital.

He was born on December 4, 1949 in Calumet to Theodore and Vivian (Hiltunen) Rein. In his youth, he and his family moved downstate where he attended the local schools and graduated from Warren High School with the Class of 1968.

Following high school, mike eventually enlisted in the United States Army serving

3 years in Germany as an EOD specialist and was then discharged in 1972

After being discharged, he started working with the car industry in Warren, MI.

Following the car industry, he began a career with the Michigan Department of corrections working in several different locations eventually retiring from Camp Kitwen and then stayed in Calumet after retirement.

After his career he volunteered with little brothers friends of the elderly often driving patients to appointments..

In his younger years, Mike loved to goose and duck hunt and also did some ice fishing. He was an avid history buff, WWII in particular, loved trivial pursuit, loved cooking and loved traveling the backroads of the Keweenaw with his brother in law, Mark. He also loved traveling with Claudia to the southwest. Especially southern Utah in particular.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Vivian Rein, his aunt Norma Siltunen and her partner Norman Palkki.

He is survived by his life partner Claudia of Calumet. His sister Lori (Mark) Joki of Calumet, and his special niece, Kim (Desi) Joki of La Crosse WI

His “sister” n law Sharon Leder of Monroe Mi, his nephew David Leder of Lansing area; his “sister” n law Pam Manchester and nephew Jeff Manchester who was his favorite Eagle Scout and baseball player.

He will be remembered by his many life long friends from the Romeo MI areA as well as local friends of the UP.
