LAURIUM — Michael “Jonsey” James Kastamo, 64, of Laurium passed away surrounded by his family at the UP Health System – Portage on Sunday, October 8, 2017.
Mike was born on September 15, 1953, in Waukegan, Illinois, the son of the late James and Barbara (Aho) Kastamo. He graduated from Zion Benton High School in 1971.
Mike was employed with the Wiebolts Department Store and Johnson Outboard Marine Company in the Waukegan area.
He moved Laurium in 1982, and lived at Cypress Manor Nursing Home for the past five years.
Mike enjoyed the simple things in life, such as good food, reading, walking, sports and visiting with people.
He is survived by two brothers, Mark Kastamo of Hancock, Marty Kastamo of Laurium; and a sister, Mari (David) Hill of Houghton. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Griffin (Darci) Kastamo of Hancock, Kara (Max) Brennan of South Lyon, Keith (Kiersten) Kastamo of Kansas City, Missouri, Laura (Patrick) Guysky of Lansing and Hannah, Austin and Conner Hill of Houghton. He has numerous greatnieces, great-nephews, aunts, uncles cousins and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, James and Barbara (Aho) Kastamo; a brother, Stephen Kastamo; and nephew, Evan Hill.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday October 12, 2017, at 1 p.m. at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet with David Taivalkoski officiating. Friends and family may call two hours prior to the service at the church.
