Obituary: Michael D. “Binky” Shiroda, Sr.

HURONTOWN

Michael David “Binky” Shiroda, Sr., 71, a resident of Hurontown, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 8, 2018, at his home.
He was born in Hancock, Michigan, on July 28, 1946, a son of the late Robert L. and Irene J. (Klarich) Shiroda. He grew in South Range and was a 1965 graduate of the Jeffers High School.
Following graduation Mike enlisted into the U.S. Army, serving from 1965-67 in Vietnam.
Mike married the former Sandy Skewes on October 4, 1969, at Holy Family Parish in South Range. The couple raised two children, and although eventually parting ways, they remained close friends.
Mike worked at the White Pine Smelter for a short period of time. He then went to work for Michigan Bell, working in the splicer department and cable construction, retiring August 20, 1999, after 30 plus years of service.
Mike was a member of St. Ignatius Loyola Parish of Houghton; was a life member of Ranger Post 6165 VFW of South Range; and a member of the Michigan Bell Pioneers of America. He loved cars and enjoyed fishing and hunting with friends. Mike was an avid fan of his grandkids sports. He attended all of their events, never missing a game.
Mike will be sorely missed by his loving family and friends.
He is survived by his son, Michael and his fiancé, Lynn LaTendresse of Chassell; his daughter, Christy and her fiancé, Dave Paul of Felch; four grandchildren, Jordan, Callie, Grace and Colton; his good friend, Sandy Cominsky of Ralph, Mich.; one brother, Timothy Shiroda of South Range; five sisters, Darlene Biekkola of Houghton, Christine (Bill) Downey of Painesdale, Barbara (Floyd) Wakeham of Liminga, Theresa (Donald) Robinson of Grand Rapids, Deborah Lee (Mike) Tchida of Hancock; an uncle, Francis “Babe” Shiroda of Hancock; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; and his special friend and buddy, Jocko Bukovich. Besides his parents, Mike was also preceded in death by a brother, Staff Sgt. Robert L. Shiroda, Jr, who died in Vietnam; a nephew, Timothy Robinson; and a brother-in-law, Al Biekkola.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2018, at St. Ignatius Loyola Parish in Houghton, with Fr. John Martignon as celebrant. There will be no prior visitation and a time of fellowship with the family will follow the mass. Spring burial with military rites will be held at the Mountain View Cemetery in South Range.
