Obituary: Melvin J. Ruohonen

Melvin J. Ruohonen, 75, a resident of Englewood, FL, and former Oskar resident passed away November 23, 2022, at his home following a lengthy illness.

     He was born on June 23, 1947, in Hancock, MI, a son of the late Hjalmer and Minetha (Carlson) Ruohonen.  Mel was raised in Hancock and White Pine, MI, graduating from the White Pine High School with the class of 1965.   He then attended Northern Michigan University where he received a teaching certificate.  During that time he coached basketball for JD Pierce in Marquette and freshman basketball in Ishpeming.

     Mr. Ruohonen had taught history and Physical Education in the Maple Valley Junior and Senior High School in Charlotte, MI.  In 1979 Mr. Ruohonen started Marketing Enterprises Group Inc.  A marketing company working with banks, auto dealers, real-estate and hotel management companies.  During this time Melvin was active with Peace Lutheran Church of Charlotte, Bethany Lutheran Church of Ishpeming and the Wawonowin Country Club.  More recently he was proud to have published a book “From Shifting Sand to Solid Rock” He also currently was a member of Woodland Community Church in Bradenton, FL.

     Melvin was an avid sports fan, enjoyed music, was a motivational speaker and attending church.  As his father told him “Shoot for the moon.  If you miss you will still be a star.”

     Surviving are: His daughters: Christa (Raymond) Boyd and Kelly (Kevin) Singleton.

            His grandchildren: Sage, Sophia, Jett, Xander Boyd

            Numerous cousins.

     A memorial service for Mel will be held at a later time with burial in the Oskar Cemetery.
